what would the need be to suppress a revolver
What would the need be to supress any firearm?

1) This is America, we don't need no stinkin' reason
2) You can plink all day long without ear protection
3) You can shoot without pissing off/scaring everybody in the area
4) Assassination attempts are much easier

Furthermore, just think about how cool it would be to fire a loud powerful gun and hear nothing but a click?

People tend to suppress firearms for the same reason they use mufflers on cars, less noise pollution and it can eliminate the need for ear plugs.

Why does gentleman987 need to ask this obvious question? Do you think I would be rude asking why you need a gun?

"There is some noise from the barrel/cylinder gap, but not as much as folks seem to expect."

I have no idea if this is the reason, I am just conjecturing. Could it be because it requires more force to push gas through the cylinder gap than push the bullet down the barrel? There is only a moment as the bullet enters the barrel where the sole outlet for the gas is the gap but that changes to the bore as the bullet progresses down it. Gas pressure would seek the easiest path to escape. In looking at this video with a .44, the cylinder gap flash is very small relative to the muzzle flash. Since it is the gas expanding outward that creates the report, a silencer on a revolver seems like it would be effective at attenuating the sound from the muzzle. That's my theory anyway. (I have another about a brontosaurus.)

Is there an open thread somewhere on the process of getting the tax stamp/approval for purchasing a suppressor?

Here is how you do it. First you need to live in AL, AR, AK, AZ, CO, CT, FL, GA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, ME, MD, MS, MT, NE, ND, NV, NH, NM, NC, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WV, WI, or WY. Then obtain the ATF form 4 from the ATF here; http://www.atf.gov/forms/index.htm . You can print forms from http://www.titleii.com/Forms.htm . You will also need form 5330.20 (to attest to your US citizenship), and fingerprint cards also available from the ATF.

When filling out the ATF form 4, make sure you do not leave any portion blank unless it says to. Block 2a is your personal info. Block 4a the manufacturer’s name and address. 4b, is silencer. 4c, is caliber. 4d, is the model name. Write N/A in block 4e, length in 4f. 4g, is the serial number. 4h, has the silencer identifying data. Blocks 5 through 8 are for dealers. Hopefully you answer no to all in blocks 13 and 14. Block 15 is where you write in why you want the silencer, something like enhance firearm collection or all legal purposes will work.

Attach with tape or glue a passport sized photo of yourself in block 16. Printing out pictures on your printer is suitable. It should be recent. Sheriff signs below in the block 17.

If you use a trust or Corp. then the photos, finger prints, sheriff signature and 5330.20 are not required. You need to include a copy of the trust and also the $200 tax. It is best to use a personal check, this way if it is lost you can cancel it and you will know when it is cashed. If you go through a dealer (only required if going across state lines) then the dealer will make sure the forms are filled out correctly.

I have never filled out an ATF form 4, I use the ATF form 1’s for making silencers. If anyone has more info to add, please do. The best places for advice are http://www.subguns.com and http://www.silencertalk.com . Good luck.
