Hi, THR Folks,

I'm sure this has been discussed, but I failed in my search for it...FAILED!
:banghead:

QUESTION: Will a Smith & Wesson M&P 9 mm handle an occasional load of +P cartridges? (Page 11 of the M&P user manual only mentions additional wear on a handgun.)

REASON: I picked up some "Glaser Pow'RBall 9mm +P" today. I understand +P is okay in the Glock 26, but am wondering about the M&P9...just for occasional use.

Thank you in advance,

Robt.

I hope so. Ive been doing it for approx 6k rds through my fullsize M&P 9mm :) LOL...

at least 5k rds thats for sure... but 6k is a close estimate.... not a single problem.

Yes.

When shooting a heavy diet of +P in a semiauto, I typically try to pick up a heavier recoil spring than standard to try and help counter the effects of additional wear.

The SAAMI maximum pressure for 9 mm Luger is 35,000 psi.
The SAAMI maximum pressure for 9 mm Luger +P is 38,500 psi.

There is an international organization called the Commission Internationale Permanente pour l'Epreuve des Armes à Feu Portatives (Permanent International Commission for Firearms Testing - commonly abbreviated as C.I.P. or CIP)

The C.I.P. safeguards that every civil firearm and all ammunition sold in C.I.P. member states are safe for the users.

To achieve this, the firearms are all professionally proofed at C.I.P. accredited Proof Houses before they can be sold to consumers. The same applies for cartridges, at regular interval, cartridges are tested at the C.I.P. accredited Proof Houses.

The standard proof of firearms consist of firing two overloaded cartridges producing 25% more chamber pressure than the C.I.P maximum pressure limit for the same cartridge in its commercial version. For pistol, revolver and rimfire cartridges the standard proof is performed with overloaded cartridges that produce 30% more chamber pressure than the C.I.P maximum pressure limit for the same cartridge in its commercial version.

That means that your S&W 9 mm model has passed proof testing at 45,500 psi or higher.
