Can't go wrong with either a Colt, Rock River Arms or a Bushmaster from my experience. Now go pick your flavor.....A2, M4, 20", 16" fixed stock, collapsable stock, iron sights, scope, red dot, floating hand guard, etc....There as many choices of AR's as there are Ford automobiles.

If you don't mind an A2 style upper (integrated carry handle) the bushmaster rules. I bought one.
I then learned that putting optics on an A2 is really frustrating, and I swapped the upper out.
Bushmaster, RRA, DPMS are the big three. Let us know exactly what you plan on doing (adding an aimpoint/scope/eotech for instance) and we can better give recommendations.
Personally, i'd recommend an RRA or DPMS flattop with removable carry handle to start with.

I have a RRA middy that has been a tack driver and I recently picked up a Stag lower & a CMMG 9mm upper that seems to be okay too.

When you get right down to it, as long as your not buying used-already-broken, just about everything these days is good. I did a ton of research on ARs in these past few months when I built my AR and with the exception of a few small companys they are all gonna go bang every time. Here is a list of rifles that I would recommend off the top of my head, generally in order from worst to best. For the averge shooter they will all probably shoot just as good.

Its all fine and dandy asking this question, because if you are anything like me, then I like to hear it first hand from MY question I ask. But this question gets asked 3 times a week, the search function is your friend, you should definately use it to get extra information.
My vote would be for RRA, the price is right, no MIM parts, and a lifetime warranty. To me, you just can't beat that. It seems to me that the past few threads like this have been overwhelmed by RRA votes. I swear they have been getting more popular by the day. But, like said in the earlier post, you can't go wrong with Bushy, DPMS, Stag, or colt(very pricey though)

What do you intend to use it for?
M4geries (copies of the M4 carbine) seem to be popular these days for general plinking.
An A2 w/ a 20 inch barrel is also a good plinker and is a good place to start if you want to get into high power matches.
An A3 (flattop) with a scope mount is popular for varmit and target shooting.
There are a lot of AR variations, all geared for specific kinds of shooting. Tell us about yourself and what kind of shooting you like to do.
As far as makes, Colt is never a bad choice... if you have the $$$.

You can buy a lower (the bottom part of the gun with the stock and trigger) and then buy different uppers. The lower receiver is the only part that the BATFE is concerned about and the only part that must go through an FFL. You can have the uppers (the barrel, bolt, bolt carrier and handguards) shipped directly to you.

I will give more details. I want to put a scope.
I wiil use it to target shoot, plinking and hunting.
I believe that a 16" barrel is good enough for me.
I want to buy it in one piece.

You don't really tell us what you want to do with the rifle but Rock River, Bushmaster or Cav Arms all make good guns. A 16" chrome lined barrel on a flattop upper with backup iron sights and an optic (Aimpoint or EoTech) is a great fighting rifle.

16" is great for everybody except long-range varminters and HP-match shooters, etc.
Target shooting and plinking -- the AR is ideal in any form.
Hunting: how big a critter are you planning to hunt? In most American states, you can't use the .223 cartridge for deer, but it's good for coyotes and the like. You can, however, buy extra upper receivers for your AR in other cartridges (6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, .458 SOCOM) that are quite sufficient for all kinds of game.
Again, AR-15 uppers can swap in and out in a matter of seconds. Many folks have one lower receiver and multiple upper receivers.
Any reason? Again, you save a $Benjamin by buying in two halves. Assembling the two halves takes about three seconds, it's just two pushpins that are designed to come in and out every time you clean anyway.
It just saves you that $100 of silly excise tax, which gives you more money to buy a good optic.

In order of what I think is best:
1] Colt LE6920
2] Colt LE6520
3] Colt LE6721
After that, I'd take a look at a RRA, Stag, Lauer type lower with an LMT upper (Lewis and Machine Tool). Sabre defense might be another choice being that they are a mil contractor. Bravo makes a fine upper too. These are the milspec uppers. There are also a number of custom shops that make top-notch uppers, but they get pricy.
Then I'd look at Stag, RRA, S&W, Armalite, Bushmaster complete rifles. With Stag (same as S&W) and RRA as the better in the bunch, but Armalite has a great rifle and a great lineup that hardly gets attention on the web. Bushmaster is Bushmaster.
Finally, there are the DPMS, Olympic, and kit guns.

Dont forget that when you buy a complete firearm you are paying a little over $100 in excise tax. As long as you dont buy both halves in the same order from the same person the same day you dont have pay this. Good thing to keep in mind.

I build a Rock River Arms Entry Tactcal, all RRA parts except the lower reciever is a CMMG, Great Rifle! Rock River Arms aren't cheap, but I've seen too many people have problems with DPMS, and lesser valued AR's
I get alot of compliments on my rifle, but I'm in Cali were they're few and far between. It's very accurate at 100 to 150 yards with just iron sights and a sand bag, I haven't yet pushed it past there yet, Best of all, I've never had a single problem, FTF, FTE, it eats all kinds of ammo.
A little spendy, but you get what you pay for.

Did you buy your AR while you were in California? I'm stationed here in CA and have been thinking of buying an upper before I transfer this spring. RRA is advertising a mid length upper for $480 plus another $45 to get a chrome lined barrel. I was wondering if you had any hassles having the upper delivered to a CA address.

Stag and S&W are not necessarily the same, they don't even use the same barrels.
That said, CMT (the parent company of Stag) makes parts for S&W, RRA, Colt...
I guess what I am saying is, you make distinctions between Colt and Stag, but they are just as much the same rifle as the Stag and the S&W, or the Stag and the RRA...
