I don't own a Glock. never have. I am looking for an explanation of the different "Gens" as well as the different models. Model 23 Gen 3 or whatever.

I have had people recently offering to sell me Glocks in FTF sales and I don't know enough to even make an offer much less pay what they are asking. This morning someone called me and asked if I wanted to buy a Glock 45 for $450. They were calling for a friend and didn't know even as much as I do.
I am always looking to buy guns at good prices so any help would be appreciated.

BTW I can read Wikepedia so something a bit more "hands on" would be most beneficial.

Models
Different calibers: 9mm, 380, 40, 357sig, 10mm, 45 and 45gap
Different sizes and layouts: 18 as select fire, then there are full size, compacts, sub compacts, target models, L, SFs and Cs.

Generations 1-4 with changing ergonomics.

Soon someone will come along and give you a detail answer. Perhaps its better if you make your query more specific to purpose, model, or caliber.

There have been a series of problem fixes(which Glock insists on calling "upgrades") and structural strengthening through out Gen 1~ Gen 4.

In addition, Gen 3 got the universal rail and finger grooves.

Gen 4 gets the recoil spring system finally suited for 40S&W, which hopefully got rid of the 40S&W version malfunction problem, especially with lights mounted.

Gen 4 also got wider magazine release, more rough grip texture, and a few grip length options.

Unless I have an issue with the finger grooves, I'd go with Gen4, since it has all the problem fixes and more hand fit options.

I would recommend that you go to the local gun range and rent any of the Gen3 or Gen4 9mm, 40 S&W or 45ACP pistols, keep track of which ones you like or don't like.

Here are two questions I'd ask first before drilling down.

1. What is the intended use? Range toy, CCW, open carry, competition.

2. What is the preferred caliber? It might be that you reload a bunch of caliber X or you have a bunch stashed away.

I know that you said that you could read Wikipedia, but I usually use the Wikipedia link below when I'm comparing models. Scroll down about halfway and there's a nice 'model comparison chart' that's very helpful. If you want more info you can read the rest of the article as well. As Glock has continued to expand their model offering I get some of the model #'s mixed up and this is my go-to spot for quick questions.

OP, go read the Wikipedia page on Glocks linked above. It's good so why ask everyone here reinvent the wheel. After digesting it no doubt you can get specific answers to further questions.
