This should be a simple task...but I've failed twice now. I would like to find a pre-fit recoil pad (limbsaver or similar) to fit a bone stock Mossberg 500. Just your run of the mill, field grade, wood stocked 500. The last two I have bought don't fit...not sure if they're meant for the poly stock or if they're a model meant to fit several guns. Does anyone know which one I need? Thanks!

it maybe hard to find a perfect one the 500 has been made for many years and the stocks will vary over the years.

Maybe that's the problem I've been having...this is for a fairly recent production, 6 or 7 years old anyway. Sure seems like someone would make something for it though

Another saying, sand it. If you don't know how, ask a friend or we can rant about the process. Done several. Works well.

AFAIK there are no plug-and-play rubber buttpads. They are always sanded to fit. The modular buttstocks I have seen are all hard plastic and/or make the snap on bits very proud so matching shapes is deliberately moot.

Ok....well, at least it wasn't just me. Just seems with all the aftermarket stuff they make for the 500 and the 870, someone would make a bolt on part that cushions the recoil...

sometimes soft is to soft. i have a limb saver on a mauser in 45/70 with real hot loads (the recoil may not be more then a magnum shell but close) but with hot loads the pad was worse the no pad. the recoil would compress the pad so much, i could feel the under side of the plastic hit my shoulder and it hurt. if u have some basic tools fitting a pad is easy. even with some tape a course file or rasp and some sand paper its not hard. or u can install the pad scribe the butt stock patorn on the back and take it some where to grind it off.

I'm in the grind one you have to fit camp. As above, there are likely lots of variations in specific M500 stocks over the years. A quick search of Midway found a Hogue and Limbsaver sold as pre-fit to the 500 and 835, but you may run into the same issue. I'm assuming this is a bird gun. Check out a slip on leather recoil pad. They are much better for mounting a gun on flying game than any sort of rubber pad that will snag and stick to clothing. Remove any existing pad, cut or shim to proper length of pull with your pad attached (you can change the mount angle slightly here also if you desire) slightly round the edges of the back of your stock, apply a thin plastic spacer with screws and grind it "close" or hardface the wood with some poly and apply the slip on leather over the top. Slick as goose poop shouldering the gun on fast flushing or crossing birds. You'll find it a very nice upgrade for a cheap field gun if you adjust the LOP to fit you. If your game is target sports with mounted gun such as trap and skeet, or slugs for deer, the rubber "grabby" pads with a pronounced curve are a positive feature.

I’ve purchased pre-fit pads for a Marlin 336 and a Remington 700. Fit on the 336 was a joke, it was excellent on the 700.
