This is a new addition to my collection (needs much work)

This was given to me by my grandfather this past weekend along with another but he has had a stroke and cannot tell me what caliber it is. From the research that I have done I think it's a CZ 8mm Mauser but am not sure.

I'm going to try to upload some more photos as we go. Trying to do this with my phone and it's taking some time.

Any idea of what year this was produced?

Is the bolt Chromed or stainless? Trying to figure out if I can clean it up or if I am going to have to re-chrome it or if it is even worth it. Gotta get all the rust/pitting off Any ideas?

Anything would be helpful. He had it stored above a cabinet in the bathroom. It was being steamed for the past 20 years...

It is a sporterized WWII military BRNO 98 Mauser.

The bolt has had the handle turned down for scope use, and a low scope safety added.

The bolt is plain carbon steel, and has been polished.

Rust on the bluing is best removed with 0000 grade Super-Fine steel wool & oil.

The bright parts can be polished with Flitz, Simichrome, or other metal polish on a rag.

Most likely, as it appears it still has a re-contoured military barrel on it.

However, some were re-chambered to 8mm-06 back in the day 8mm ammo was hard to find in the USA. They could then use common 30-06 military brass necked up to use 8mm bullets.

Your best bet is to find a gunsmith who can do a chamber cast and find out 100% positive for sure it is still an 8mm Mauser.

he had it almost 30 years and has never fired it. What year were all the conversions started?

Could I take a 8mm or 30-06 brass and strike the primer again or even a fresh one to see where it hit to determine?

8mm was slightly larger wasn't it?

Forgot to say thank you as well.

The 8mm has a slightly larger bullet, but the casing is shorter than a .30-06 casing. I also believe the bolt face is the same for both cartridges, therefore striking the primer will tell you nothing.
