i'm interested in purchasing a .40S&W P229 in the near future, and i also want to get a .40S&W P226 some time down the road. one of the things that i find appealing about the P228 is that it can use the larger capacity P226 magazines. i've heard that the P229 mags are wider than the P226 mags, in .40S&W, which suggests that the P229 can't use the P226 mags, but i wanted to be sure. thanks!

Actually that statement suggests the P226 cannot take the P229 magazines but the P229 will accept the P226 magazines.

From my understanding they will work but will not fit flush, I have only done some swapping with the 9MM magazines.

I have a P228 and P229 (.357SIG). P226 (15/17/20RND 9MM) and P228 (13/15RND 9MM) magazines will fit in the P229 but the P229 magazines will not fit in the P228 (too wide).

Is this only an issue of not wanting to buy more magazines?

P226 mags carry 12 rounds in 40/357, as do P229 magazines. There would be no advantage to the longer magazine in the 229.

basically. also, if both the P229 and P226 are carried at the same time (very tactical, i think you'll agree :D) it would be nice to carry a single magazine type.
