Montana gold 45ACP 185Gr JHP using HS-6.

I loaded 50 rounds using the Speer #14 manual receipe for 185Gr gold dots used 9.4 gr of hs-6. getting conflicting data all over the internet. Haven't fired off any rounds yet. will be used for a Glock 21SF.

9.4 sounds like a reasonable place to start with HS-6 and a 185 Gr HP.

I would suggest trying WSF or AA #5 over HS-6, but you already have the HS-6.

HS-6 is a really slow burning powder for a pistol...its better with heavy bullets.

A faster burning powder will work better with the bullets you are using...Unique would be good.

that data on the hodgdon site is for a semiwadcutter. is it the same as a HP?? The reason I'm using HS-6 is because it works well with my 124gr FMJFP and I wanted to use the same powder for my .45.

I tried HS-6 in my 45 and didn't like it. I liked Titegroup better and 231 even better. I'm shooting lead in my 45 though. I do like HS-6 in my 9mm for 147 grain bullets.

I haven't tried titegroup yet but i have tried Win 231 and Universal clays liked the 231 better for accuracy and metering. 231 works extremely well in my .38 loads so i wanted to save the 231 for that. haven't found a good use for the universal yet.It likes the closer to max loads and the lower loads i've been seeing unburnt powder. On the plus side it burns very clean.

I see your point...147 grains is a heavy bullet in a 9mm.

It would cost you less in the long run to use faster powder (Unique) for the 45...or heavier bullets. Just my opinion.

Hornady's new book says 8.6 grains of HS-6 to start...10.3 grains is max with 185 JHP (XTP).

Speer says 8.9 start - 9.9 max...

For 45 ACP I use AA #5 and Titegroup... both work well, and seem to be fairly clean burning.. but both use in the 5.x gr range... gotta watch double charging...

I chronoed some of those HS-6 Loads
I started at 8.6 - 9.0
Results:
Weapon - Glock 21SF
Bullet - MG 185gr JHP
COL - 1.200
Powder - HS-6 9.0gr.
Primer - CCI 300
Case - Winchester
Avg. Vel. - 847fps.
Accuracy - Very Good
Recoil - Normal
Comments: No FTF's or FTE's

Thanks for all your help

I use HS-6 to reload for my P345 and my super redhawk 44 mag. For the 45 I mainly load 230 gr rainiers and 230 RN laser casts. Shoots well, just bought 8lbs. I have never loaded anything lighter than 230 gr.
