Can you completely transmogrify NFA weapons?

I found out my Form 4 for my new M10/9 SMG got approved this week. YAY!

So now I got questions about what I can legally do with it. I thought about using the serial numbered portion of the right side plate to make a MP5. With registered HK sears you can build MP5s, G3s, HK21s, HK51s, HK53s, and whatever... the model of the gun doesn't seem to matter as long as the caliber is listed on the Form 4.

So why can't I cut the serial number off my MAC and then weld it into a HK94 receiver and use that to build a MP5? The MAC is registered for 9mm and .45acp so that shouldn't be a problem. Without the right side lower receiver plate the MAC is completely inoperable and isn't a firearm any more, so no extra MG is being created. I've heard of people converting registered Stens into Sterlings with seemingly no problems.

Any NFA gurus know for sure?

I seriously doubt what you are contemplating is anywhere in the vicinity of being legal.

just my .00002 cents worth.

I don't know what Form 4 you are looking at, but the one in front of me requires the manufacturer, model, caliber, length of barrel, overall length and serial number. You can do some things to the gun, but making it into another gun would be a no-no. As for cutting out the serial number and welding it to another gun, all I can say is that if ATF sees that post they should get a good laugh.

And a registered gun is not the same as a registered sear. You can't take the unregistered sear out of the registered gun and swap it around to make other machineguns. Transferring a registered gun that has a registered sear in it requires two transfer applications and two tax payments. The same is true of an NFA firearm with a suppressor (silencer). They are separate items and separate transfers, even if they are attached permanently.

I might also say that contrary to what has been stated on another site, the owner of a registered machinegun can not "convert" it to a semi-auto and then sell it without paperwork. "Once a machinegun, always a machinegun" applies to that idea also.

For one thing, you're registering the GUN as a unit, not just the serial number. The serial number just identifies the GUN. Do you really think the ATF is ok with you moving the serial number from gun to gun?:scrutiny:

Lol ok. A resounding NO is what I expected to hear. :p

Guess I'll be stuck with a ghetto bullet hose instead. :D
Good enough for me, if it makes feinstein and VPC soil their depends that's all that matters.

As stated above, you cannot do that.
MAC's are pretty versatile, though. You can put an HK sotck on it, an HK K grip, etc. You can change a lot of physical features of the gun, but you cannot mess with the receiver itself.

I've seen MAC's dressed up as HK's M16's Uzi's, etc.
There are a lot of parts available to do it.

Be careful

Transmogrification is a highly technical process of writing different animals' names on the side of a cardboard box and making a dial for each setting. Where you can run into trouble is when your pet tiger things it'd be funny to set the dial to "duck" rather than "T-Rex" like you asked him to. Ask Calvin. :what:

I've heard of "repairing" a registered receiver by milling away all but the identifying marks and 'attaching' the body of a donor receiver... but that was to repair a damaged receiver, not transmogrificationalismexpialidociousness...

The easy answer...

Even if you own a registered sear, you cannot install it into a firearm in which you must alter the host gun. Drilling a single hole in the host firearm to allow the installation of a registered auto sear is prohibited by ATF.

However, you can do some things to improve it.
