I have an old shotgun that was my great great grandfathers. I think it was from 1890-1920. I have a photo with the gun in it from around 1920 The gun is a 12 ga. with exposed hammers it is marked A. GREENER on the action and has laminated steel stamped between the barrels.
The barrel is marked on the underside with the following marks: JM 182 Belgian black powder proof marks (ELG) *F I have been told that A. GREENER has been documented as a product of Henri Pieper of Leige Belgium.

Can anyone tell me more about the gun? Thanks Ops41

Belgium at the time produced thousands of cheap, barely serviceable shotguns labelled with names similar to those of more famous makers.

Westley Richards was one of the better English makers and the Belgians marked W Richards on theirs. Same with Parker and Barker, Greener, etc.

This should not be shot. Admire it as it hangs on the wall.

Piepers ran from very good(marked as Pieper) to absolute trash.

HTH....

I second the "do not shoot" advice. These old shotguns were not designed with modern ammunition in mind. The old damascus twist barrels especially don't like smokeless powder. They tend to "untwist" in a hurry. Not good.

Enjoy your beautiful piece of history though. My dad has one that was his dad's. He restored it himself. Looks great over the fireplace.
