i may be coming into possesion of a Steyr Pro Hunter...stainless/synthetic stock. but it's not really in a claibre that i'm interested in.

it's in 7mm-08 and my "druthers" run toward 6.5X55mm. i was wondering if it could be rebarreled to .260 Rem and tried a web search :uhoh:

either i'm doing it wrong...very likely...or it just isn't a common request. the only thing i turned up is that the barrel is "pressed in" rather than screwed in

my longgun colleection usually runs into rimfires and mil-surp, so i'm at a lost and hoping to tap the knowledge base of the forum.

any information would be apprieciated, thanks in advance :D

There is the manual. From the looks of it, the barrel can be replaced. It is threaded, but it seems to use an unusual system of locking collars different from the Savage system. It appears that the barrel is threaded into two bushings, one locks it into place (probably similar in concept to the Savage, but it is inserted into the receiver and so is not seen from the outside) into the other bushing. This assembly then seems to be slid into the receiver and, iif I am correct in what I have read, is locked into place with a special nut on the bottom of the receiver (that has a very specific torque specification).

Again, this is merely based on what I read, it appears that replacing the barrel would actually be pretty easy. At least it might be. I would probably put a call into a gunsmith and see. Of course, getting another barrel could be a challenge as this could be a completely proprietary design.

Perhaps O.T. but I think a set of 7mm 08 loading dies would be a LOT less expensive than a new barrel.

I don't know what you mean by "coming into possession of" but if there is not some great sentimental attachment, you would do better to sell or trade it to get what you really wanted.

I ahve no doubt that a skilled gunsmith could rebarrel it to whatever you want.

A few years ago I had one of my Steyrs in 8x 68 rebarrled back at the factory, trust me, you do not want to go there. They did awesome work, good as new complete with test target.

But, I paid for it in time and money.

Just give Jack a call at SAI. He said you don't have to send it back to Austria for a rebarrel job. Just remember that since Steyr's are made in Austria that the threads will be metric.
