IS THIS A GOOD PRICE FOR A 280 STEYR STAINLESS PRO HUNTER? I recently had a post asking about these rifles. That post is gone now but sense then I put the gun on a layaway to give me 60 days to decide what I want to do without the risk of someone buying the gun while I decide. I still don't know much about them and I've heard that you need high scope mounts for them. I don't like that idea at all! But in the end this seems like a good deal and I am in the market for a 280. I like the feel of this rifle but will I need to replace the bolt handle in order to mount a scope without high rings? 280s are hard to come by anymore without having to get some special package (mountain rifle) for instance for the rem.700 I know tc makes them still. So I was excited to find this but I'm still very unfamiliar with steyr rifles. I like to hunt at long ranges witch usually requires some accurizing the rifle. This gun looks and feels very solid so other than a bed job I don't know what if anything will need to be done to get this gun to use For long rang (600+) hunting. They dont seem to have much for aftermarket goodies on these rifles. This is the price. What I would like to know is if this is a jump on it price of would I be better off going with a rem.700 of some kind? That I will pay more in the end to do what I want.

Why not change the title to read: "Is this a fair price for a .280 Rem Steyr-Mannlicher?"

Then only people who might have a clue will read your post. As it is now,we only discover we have to open the photo to find out what in the *&^%$## rifle you are talking about!

Click the Go Advanced button at the bottom of the post window and it will let you edit the title.

According to Steyr's site the Stainless Pro Hunter doesn't come in .280 Rem any more. Did though. Cabela's in Post Falls, Idaho wants $799.88 for one. There's another on Guns International(also a Cabela's shop) at $899.99.
So $639 isn't ugly, but 'jump on' only if you really want the rifle.
No long range (600+) hunting with a .280. A 140 grain bullet, sighted in at 100, drops 74.2" at 600 with 1165 ft/lbs. of energy. A 160 drops 90" with 1881 ft/lbs. Both are Nosler factory data.

I already have a 280 sporterized k98 that I dropped a 6x6 bull elk at 608 (ranged yards) with. I'm not overly concerned about the drop as I will be accounting for that with my scope dope. The best price other than this one I have found was at gun broker for $899. So it does seem to be something you can find but still pspendy. Thank you for the info Sunray

That is a good price.

The 280 is an excellent choice.

The rifle will likely be a tack driver.

It will weigh almost 8 lbs naked, with a scope and mounts probably 9+. That is either a negative or positive depending on your point of view. But is on the heavy side for a sporter.

Normally low rings will work on scopes with 40mm front objectives. Because of the shape of the bolt handle you will probably need at least medium rings, maybe high. I wouldn't replace the bolt handle until I'd shot and used it for a while. Because of the stock shape you may find taller rings works for you on that rifle.

Spare magazines are expensive and hard to find.

If you buy it and later find you don't like it you should be able to come real close to getting your money back since you are getting such a good price initially. It may take a little longer to sell since fewer people know a lot about them. But to the right person it'll sell at a good price used.

It wouldn't suit my needs and style of hunting, I had one briefly and responded to the previous thread. But that doesn't mean it isn't a fine rifle at a good price. They have a small, but very satisfied loyal base of supporters. If you go in knowing the strengths and weaknesses and decide the strengths outweigh the weaknesses you'll have a very nice rifle that is something much different from what the masses carry hunting.
