I've been contemplating getting a modern polymer pistol. However, I have a strict requirement that the gun have a JMB-style control layout, including a thumb safety that can be ridden.* I've not been able to shoot a safety-equipped M&P, and have gotten conflicting reports on whether the safety can be "ridden" in the manner of a 1911/Hi-Power/CZ/etc. When I grip the pistol without firing, I have no problem getting my thumb up there comfortably, as I have a pretty high grip. Anybody have any first-hand experience they care to relate?

* I'm not looking for a debate on whether external safeties are good ideas. I'm trying to keep commonality between platforms, primarily for the benefit of my wife.

I have the M&P 9c. I shoot with my thumb riding on top of the safety very comfortably. It feels like this is where my thumb belongs.

The ones I've handled allow comfortable placement of the strong thumb on the thumb safety.

Hilton Yam is shooting a M&P9 to give his elbows a rest from the 1911, he really likes the thumb safety on the M&P as it gives his thumb a familiar place to rest while shooting

Thanks. I had a vendor at a gun show try to convince me that riding the safety on an M&P would result in my thumb getting chewed up by the slide. I was incredulous, but figured I'd check in here to see if someone knew something I did not. FWIW, when I've handled them in stores, I've found my thumb sits there comfortably.

It will ride there very naturally but be aware you may not have the slide lock open on the last shot.
