Can you transport a firearm across state lines for gunsmithing?

I live pretty close to the MN/WI border and found a place not to far into wisconsin that does duracoat finishes. I haven't been able to find anyplace near here that does.

Is it legal for me to carry the firearm across state lines, drop it off for refinishing, and then pick it up and take it home?

I figure that its okay because no sale of the firearm is taking place and it would be like taking a hunting vacation and having to get something fixed by a gunsmith while in another state.

But you never know.

as long as you follow the rules of transportation in each county(more likely locked in the trunk with no ammo)i see why not.we get repairs and custom builds shipped in from all over the world.i don't see why driving to a repair shop would be different,even if it is in a different state.check first,i could be wrong.

Perfectly legal under federal law but, as Simmonsguns says, make sure it is legal in any state/locality you pass through. I doubt there are many restrictions in those states, but in other states, there could be a problem even if the gun is unloaded and locked up.

I am sure this doesn't apply, but just to be complete, you DO need permission from BATFE to take a machinegun or other NFA firearm across state lines unless you are a federal SOT licensee (dealer, manufacturer, importer).
