Check your news tonight, even with old-fashioned cardboard boxes and hand-counting we get results in just a couple hours after stations close, and they are accurate to the vote. (Scrutineered last time, one table tried to do 2 steps at once, against my advice, and I checked their numbers closely. Needless to say doing it half-assed means they had to stay late.)

It's hard to tell just what the percentage of seats will be won by each party, because the FPP riding system heavily favours the party that does slightly better than the rest. 20% of the vote can mean 5% of the seats, and 40% of the vote can be 70% of the seats. Anyway, unless the Conservatives have their votes spread out too thin across the country they should win, and form at least a minority gov't (they don't have 50% of seats, but have more than any other party).

If somehow the Liberals win, well, it saddens me to say it, but it's time to start digging little handgun-sized graves:( And as a bonus the Liberals promised not only to ban handguns, but to delete parts of the constitution that limit their power. I know some people who vote Liberals, but I don't think they really understand all the issues. Some beleive that the Liberals will save the pension system, but don't like to discuss how it will be done... Other's simply have the will to vote, and are following their parent's footsteps. In the 20's age group I see 30% turnout at best.

Wish us luck, if things work out as they ought to my city will be sending the next Prime Minister to Ottawa, he will give power to the provinces, and the days of 'appointing' Senators, judges, and governor generals will be over, and we can ELECT our gov't from now on! And they won't take our guns away.

If it's time to bury them, it's time to dig them up.

Good luck up there, y'all need it.

I'll be watching this closely. If the Liberal party is kicked out of power, which looks likely, it will send a good message to the Democrats in the U.S. Bush is even less popular in Canada than in the U.S., and the Liberal party is campaigning against Bush heavily. If the Liberals lose power, it will signal a vote of no confidence in the encroaching socialist state. It will also consistute a resounding vote against gun control.

Both of these issues have destroyed the Democratic party in the States. If the Democrats abandoned their blind dogmatic loyalty to these idiological issues, they'd offer a real choice for many voters in the U.S. In many ways the Republicans best represent my views, but there are some key issues that drive me away. First, I'm strongly pro-choice. For me, it's the only pragmatic stance a rational adult can take from a pure sociological standpoint. Second, I think organized religion is the most corrupt institution in the history of humanity, especially the religions based on the primitive superstitions of the Semetic tribes roaming the near east three thousand years ago. Third, I strongly oppose government meddling in affairs like marriage. If youd don't like gay marriage, don't marry a gay. If you feel like telling other people whom they can marry, shut the **** up. Last, I strongly support the legalization of marijuana. I don't like marijuana, but I don't like any other drug like alcohol either, except caffiene. Mess with my caffiene, the revolution starts now, buddy. I especially don't like alcohol, but don't think my personal prejiduces should be a factor in making beer illegal.

If I was dictator and followed the Republican world view, ie. forcing my views down the throats of the rest of the country, agnosticism would be the state religion, selling beer would be a felony, and abortions would be mandatory for anyone with an IQ of less than 110. That is not a country in which I or anyone else would want to live, but neither would I want to live in a country with a Christian soldier like George Bush as dictator.

If the Democrats can wake up (highly unlikely), they could pull enough votes from progressive moderates like me. (My views may seem extreme--are extreme--but I would not vote for any lunatic who held such views.)

Umm, lobotomy boy, you're not a progressive moderate, you're a libertarian (little "l")...

The major problem with the democratic party is that it has been hijacked by the loony left, similarly the Republicans have been hijacked by the Bushiites... At one time the democratic party WAS the moderate party, if they returned to that and ditched the gun control BS I'd vote for them...

Really?

I wouldn't vote for a Democrat, even non-loony.

Higher taxes, more regulations on everything, knee-jerk support for unions no matter how corrupt, affirmative action, support for the United Nations...

Those are all MAINSTREAM Democrat positions.

Oh, and good luck to Canada!

I hope that the Liberal politicians up there not only lose the election, but commit mass suicide. It would be good for the country.

Yay, they've got you fooled into cheering "Hurray for my side!". :)

Both parties are about the empowerment of the government and controlling the civilians. It's not the left vs the right, its the political machine against "we, the people."

As for spending, the Democrats tax to spend, the republicans borrow to spend. The lesser of two evils is..uhm, evil.

But as for the vote, good luck my friend. I hope it goes well for the Canadian people.

Really? Is that why I'm a dues-paying member of the Libertarian Party?

The problem with the third-party mantra that both "sides" are the same is a simple one: it's philosophical. Philosophy doesn't translate perfectly into victories on the ground.

I used to work for a consulting company that said that there are seven vantage points. Here's their web site of models. http://www.mgtaylor.com/mgtaylor/glasbead/expmodel.htm

Anyway, the seven vantage points are depicted thus:
vantagep.gif

Politics are complex, but freedoms are simple. If you want to win, worry about your OWN philosophy, but fight on the side that will help you win battles right here and now.

Supporting the Democrats out of spite for the Republicans, while tempting, won't gain us anything. Working with one or the other on a particular issue will.

Most libertarians are WAY too stuck on philosophy.

This set of pages is interesting. I highly recommend it, if you want to know who might support your ideals here and now, while you're working on libertarian utopia.

Is Harper the conservative guy? He's said he will strengthen the border between Canada and the US to stop guns from coming in. It doesn't sound on the surface to me like the pro gun folks will gain as much as they think from him.

Harper has come out against the total Liberal handgun ban, he has vowed to repeal long gun registration and other little bs gun laws.

He is a HUGE improvement over Paul Martin.

The Tories are leading about 36 percent to 32 percent over the Liberals. The New Democrats (ultra left) have 18 percent and the BQ (Bloody Quebecios or something like that) have 8 percent. This means that the Tories will lead with a minority.

This could be good, in that it could drive the U.S. Democratic party a bit towards the center. Ultimately they are all ****** bags, though.

Latest update:

Tories: 36
Liberals: 31
New Dems: 17
BC: 9

Just for the record, we don't discuss abortion, homosexuality, or religion in here. You can do that at www.armedpolitesociety.com if you wish.

We also don't refer to people as feminine hygiene products no matter how fresh or invigorating their scent may be. That one you can't do at APS, either.

Liberals and Leftist still have a majority of the seats in the Parliment. I doubt the conservatives will last very long, or be able to do much with their minority Government.

well, that does it. conservatives got a minority govt

So just exactly what does that mean?

Can they accomplish anything with a minority?

Or is it gridlock?

Canada has four major parties that win enough seats in the Parliment to vote as a block. Three of those four parties are left-wing or Left-leaning. The conservatives are the only right leaning party in Canada. So because the Conservatives got the most votes they control the government, but because there are more liberals in the parliment they will have a tough time passing any new legislation. Basicaly it a dead-lock.

I think that your country has betrayed you while parading down the "primrose path" of Socialism. A conservative uprising may be in order, if you want to stay alive, and in control of your nation. Otherwise, it will become another Mexico.

I won't be holding my breath.

Maybe michael moore will now go and gorge himself with pity food and choke on a fried chicken bone. :D

Ole fatboy seems to be the kiss of death for anyone he campaigns for.

Ya Conservatives won, once again my City is Liberal free, and this time we managed to purge the last clinger in the province.

Conservatives want to devolve power to the provinces, repeal gun registry, kick Liberal's ass for suggesting confiscating legally-ownder handguns, and show the country that they AREN'T evil.

The advertisements the Liberals ran really were BS. They honestly showed advertisements showing soldiers patrolling streets, saying that the Conservatives would turn the country into a police state.:banghead:. When soldiers were killed that week by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan they realized they might be offending some people...

I think the advertisements were a glimpse into the Liberal mindset. They ran advertisements accusing the Conservatives of a 'Hidden social agenda' and 'plans to turn Canada into a police state'. The Liberals have brought us secret courts with secret trials, the Liberals created a long-gun registry. The Liberals announced they would delete the parts of the constitution that allow a province to 'opt-out' of bad legislation. The Liberals announced they would loot all legal and registered handguns. And they EXPECTED PEOPLE TO VOTE FOR ALL THAT.

So, the Liberals were thinking about 'hidden social agendas' and 'turning Canada into a police state', and their actions clearly show they were acting as well as thinking. I'm very glad they have been stopped!

[Party] [Elected] [Leading] [Vote Share]
CON 124 0 36.25%
LIB 103 0 30.22%
BQ 51 0 10.48%
NDP 29 0 17.49%
IND 1 0 .52%
OTH 0 0 5.05%

BTW the Conservatives will team up with the Bloc Quebecois, and then they have the majority. The Bloc will be VERY happy to work on aspects increasing provincial power, and the Liberals are HATED in Quebec, they are vitrulently hated there now. If Quebec comes out and says they are in favour of citizens carrying, I will probably move there!
