Canadian Shrapnel

I guy I know had a close, violent encounter with a bear in Canada. Short version of the story is that a starving bear attacks them when they're on the lakeshore waiting for the float plane. Guy goes for their emergency gun, a single shot shotgun with "Canadian Shrapnel." Said it dropped the bear, destroyed its insides.

What is Canadian shrapnel?
