Can't decide: new AK-74 or new Walther PPK?

Whatever you decide about the other two, try to hang on to the Garand.

As far as ammo, have you checked CMP's prices?

.30-06 M2 Ball Greek HXP
200 RDS loose in .30 CAL can
$98.00

Man, when I bought my M1 from the CMP, they were selling (IIRC) 980 rounds (or 1080?) for around $215. :(

Do you own a handgun now?
Nope. And wifey doesn't like handguns, either.

If the price difference between .32 and .380 isn't HUGE, then "Less is More" may win out in terms of the chambering.

BTW: On another site, someone from Malaysia posted this picture of his dad's PPK. This thing is SICK!

am I more or less likely to suffer from slide bite

You literally will not know until you handle and perhaps cycle the gun.

Your hand is not my hand is not his hand and unless you have very slender hands "small" has no meaning.

^^^You COULD say that you aren't going to know unless you SHOOT both guns; handling and cycling isn't going to do it, either. And who is going to have both on hand, and let you shoot them? Trust me, a .32 bites less than a .380. THEN there are methods to use gripping the gun the reduce bite, or eliminate it (Like keeping your shooting thumb way down). I have just decided to IGNORE hammer bite, grip the gun properly, and it seems to have gone away. Man up. It's just a .32. Even a bite now and then heals in a day or two.

Keep the M1. I love my AK-74, even though it's pretty worn. Since you don't have a handgun yet, I would get a Hi-Point 9mm (which I also own) or some other inexpensive, reliable handgun, and an AK-74. My 74 is Romanian... Wish I had the money for a Bulgarian one.

Smith fixed the PPK hammer bight as well as the stove-piping issue. A fine gun and a good shooter.

I have a PPK (not a S&W) and it's a nice gun. I have put 12 rounds through it in the last three years. I'll trade you my PPK for your Garand. :D

Again allow my 2 cents, I carried a ppk's, in the 70's when there were no small guns of any consequence, so we carried snubbys or ppk's, I had both, I relied on my model 60 much more than the ppk's, it jammed failure to feed you name it. I would say when it ran right it was a highlly capable weapon, you could empty the mag in a little over a second. But it just had too many problems. Get the rifle, unless you don't have a pistol, pistols come first in a day to day city dwellers life, as you can't walk around with a rifle obviouslly.

And the two choices couldn't be more different: a new Arsenal SGL-31 AK-74 (in 5.45x39.5) or a new S&W Walther PPK in either .32 ACP or .380 ACP.
As you say, they are quite different. It really comes down to which role is more important to you. Do you want a gun for plinking, outdoor range work and possible home defence? Get the Arsenal. Want a CCW weapon, an easy to deploy night stand gun, a casual indoor range gun or just want to pretend you are James Bond? Get the PPK!

Personally, I've wanted a PPK for years so that's where I would go, although I think I would look for an Interarms PPK in good shape, as I have heard S&W is having problems with the current production Walthers.

For the Walther, I'm leaning towards .32 ACP - "Less is more". This caliber was just fine for police in Europe for 30 years, so I figure it's probably good enough for me, too.
The .32 guns are the same size and the same weight as the .380, the .32 is a weaker, smaller round than the .380, and generally .32 ammo is more expensive and harder to find than the .380. AFAIK, there is absolutly no reason in the world to buy a .32 PPK (unless you happen to run across a WWII era collectors item). Get the .380!

Owning both an Interarms PPKS and a Smith PPK, the Smith is vastly better. I couldn't get through a magazine without a stove pipe and a bloody hand with the Interarms. Not a single failure with the Smith and I've had it for several years...and several rounds. My $.02.

Another vote for the modern Smith variant PPK. Under 700 dollars will get you that PPK you said was "sick". If you're interested in the link I can find it, shoot me a PM, a few online gun stores have the engraved and wood gripped stainless PPKs for 657.00 shipped...add whatever your FFL charges for transfer fees and you have one heck of an heirloom gun. Stunningly gorgeous.

Good enough for you to shoot at the, range? Sure, what isn't? But police in europe probably used swords at one point too.

Both guns would be used strictly to have fun out at the target range, if that makes a difference.

How can anybody predict what you will enjoy doing better than you? Not that i suggest you let it sway you but i'd go AK.

S&W's "engraved" PPK's are nothing like the plated, German engraved one shown above. Those usually go for $2000+ to high end Walther collectors. If you saw them side by side, you would know why hand engraving is that much more expensive than laser engraving.

Get a P64,swap in the Wolf spring kit-$185-240.00OTD...more punch tjan either .32 or.380;cheaper to shoot....and spend the difference om am AK.Dilemma solved.

Here's another view of that gun.

BTW: When the owner of this gun (who lives in Malaysia) dies, his family will be required to turn the gun over to the government and it will be gone for good! That's what happens when you have no 2nd Amendment rights!

Not if he lost it
Yeah, it sure would be a cryin' shame if the family "lost" that gun after their Dad passes away.

"Sorry, Mr. Malaysian Government Man, but we can't find Dad's engraved Walther PPK with the white handles anywhere! We've looked in all the obvious places, but it's gone! It's really unfortunate, because Dad's last wish was that we hand the gun over to you so you could melt it down. If it turns up under a floorboard or something, you'll be the first to know."

^^^That might fly in the US, but in most oppressed countries, they'd just lock you and your family up until the gun could be "found". That could be forever, or they might just start killing off family members until they didn't have to use up prison space. Things are different overseas..................
