I have a Browning A-Bolt bolt-action rifle. I removed the bolt for cleaning and must have bumped something on the bolt which caused the mechanism to set off as if it were being fired (firing pin is now forward).

Now the "thing" at the back of the bolt turned down and I cannot re-insert the bolt. Please help.

The A-Bolt cocks on on opening. Grasp the bolt in your left hand...as though it were in the rifle with the striker forward...and "lift" the handle...like you would if you'd just fired a round and wanted to open the breech and eject the empty. The handle will turn and lock in the cocked position.

You'll want to be holding the shroud (the casting covering the end furthest from the lugs) in one hand, and then turn the bolt handle with respect to the shroud with the other hand. If you look under the shroud you'll see the cocking piece has to run up a ramp to reach full cock. BTW it takes a certain amount of strength to do this.

Edited to add this pic:

The shroud is that piece in the middle there, covering the rear end of the bolt behind the bolt handle. You can see the end of the cocking piece, painted red, protruding under the rear of the shroud.

Recocking a bolt

In the post above it shows the shroud, cocking indicator, and safety.

Since the bolt is already out of the action, look at the red cocking indcator, the oppisite end of the moving piece that has that red paint will have a shoulder, using something that won't move or break, hook that shoulder on it, and pull the bolt body towards you while holding the shroud in place with one hand and gently turning the bolt.

Easier then trying to prove your a HEMAN, and wrestling it!
