i destroyed my operating system trying to delete spyware.

got the operating system reinstalled from the cabs.

WHEW

BUT now i do not have an OEM number for windows 95c.

ARRRGH

threw the old number out somewhere:banghead:

if someone has an OEM number that might work thanks in advance.

yeppers win95c is fairly stable and runs my BASIC programs left over from the 80's.

i left the internet link up and was left a message in notebook to "upgrade this POS."

I think they fixed that by Win95c, but it might be worth a try. Otherwise, search usenet ( http://groups.google.com ) for CD keys. They're out there.
Once you find one you'll be able to access your *gun related* files, which you will promptly make a backup copy of, right? :D
 
There is a generic code for Win95 that you can use, as long as you actually have a valid license. It goes something like this:

11195-012345-111111

This might not be it exactly, but the concept is simple. The first set of numbers is 11195. The second set starts with 0 and counts up to however many characters will fit in that box. The last set of numbers is all 1s.

Make sure you actually own a real copy of Windows before using this code, otherwise you'd be committing software piracy.

If your "OEM number-key screen" is something like like a box for some numbers, then "OEM" hard-coded in, and then blanks for more numbers, well you are gonna hafta find the original "Key Code", probably on the cd-case.

IIRC, the OEM versions could only be re-installed with the original Key-code. They wrote that code somewhere on the harddisk, and in the Regsitry, too. OEM version would compare the Key Code you put in with the hard-written Key Code in the *.CAB files

One of the Microsoft Support guys told me that several years back...after I spent a couple of days pounding divots into the desk with my forehead, trying to make a non-OEM Key Code work with an OEM version. If you have a non-OEM version, only a non-OEM key Code works. If you have an OEM version, original matching Key Code is the only one that works. I finally had to do the full fdisk/format/reload routine on a PC that got 'virused'.

1. Yes it is gun related - the gentleman would like to get his GUN FILES back.
2. No we are not discussing piracy - we are discussing restoration of a legal copy of Win 95 for which the key has been lost.

Now if someone were telling him to get an illegal cracked copy of a different OS to use then we'd be talking piracy.
 
Kamicosmos, not trying to pirate, when win95 was installed on my box a zip of win 95 was put on the hard drive. i was told it was the "cab"

my gun files are lists of all my serial numbers including guns i have sold or given away. plus ballistics/load data from when i was a hand loader. 7 years of match scores and several mailing data bases for my local club.

ugaarguy, thx for the kind words but i have to duck whenever i am called a gentleman. in my experience that has been followed with a poke in the nose.

I would gat a new cheap pc (DELL has some good deals out there) pull out the hard drive from the old pc put it in the new one as a secondary drive. Boot the new system copy the files to the new drive. After that, place the old drive carefully back in the old pc and blast it to hades with a high powered rifle then have a beer and enjoy your new pc....

That's what I would do.

If you had a zip drive or other removeable type drive, I have a boot disk i made from when I used to do field support to boot a number of drive types like cd rom, zip, jaz, raid controllers, etc that I could send to you. You would have to know your way around DOS though.......
 
er...if you want to recover your old data, do that first before installing Windows otherwise you'll very likely overwrite the files you want to save. Even if you've already formatted the drive, it's simple to recover them - but do not install Windows yet.

Do you have another PC? Rather than buying a new PC, remove your current HDD and set the jumper in the back to slave and hook it up to another PC as the slave drive(as someone metioned earlier.) If you don't have another PC...do any of your friends have a PC? You could simply hook up your HDD to their PC temporarily as the slave drive and copy over the files to their master HDD. After copying the files over, you could burn the files onto a cd-r/rw (if they have a burner) or put them all on a zip disk...if that is available.

I think that is the safest way to go. I wouldn't want to deal with finalizing a Windows installation with all of those valuable gun files on your HDD...it's too risky.

What's worrying me is that he's already started installing Windows - and if he performed a format first to prepare the drive for the installation, he won't be able to see those files if he installs the drive into another PC without getting into the realm of data-recovery.

If he didn't format first, there shouldn't be a problem seeing them.
 
As AndyC had mentioned previously...I suppose the question of the day is: Did you reformat your HDD when you started installing Windows? If you already reformatted...may God help you. If you didn't reformat, then you could be safe by using the method I mentioned earlier.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that you didn't already reformat. :)

Since the cd key is apparently a PITA to get ahold of, I'd take the entire HD and put it in another computer - a friend's, work computer, whatever. You should be able to access your crucial files and transfer them off of the HD since the other computer will be booting off of the primary drive.

Afterwards, it may be cheaper to buy a new computer with the OS installed (check slickdeals.net) than to buy a new OS if you still don't find your key.

Buy another hard-drive (they're cheap enough) and install Windows on that one - set the original drive to "Slave" via the jumpers and once Windows is up and running, copy your files across.
 
^^^^ --yet another easy solution.

Everyone needs a slave drive and a master drive on the pc. It's the easiest/smartest/safest way to go about things.
