Caps????

I hope this isnt a dumb question but here it goes.
At the rang this weekend i tried to fire a new bp revolver for the first time, well #10 caps wouldnt even begin to go on. so my question is what are the most common caps you all use? and what do you use for a capper?

Not dumb at all, in fact, a very frequent question.

I wish there was a good answer.

There are commonly 5 different size/supplier caps available:
CCI #10, CCI #11, Remington #10, Remington #11 and RWS #1075 (which the manufacturer claims is a #11).

Unfortuately, in my experience, those numbers don't mean a whole lot in terms of relative size and/or suitability for a given gun or nipple cone. I've measured several of each and found no relationship between the numbers and the brands. Here are the results (the first number is the inside diameter at the opening, the second number is the overall height, both in inches):

CCI #10: 0.160 0.160
CCI #11: 0.166 0.162
Rem #10: 0.167 0.168
Rem #11: 0.166 0.145
RWS #1075: 0.165 0.154

I should mention that the inside diameter measurement is very difficult to make reliably, so the precision in that number is very much less than the three digits implies.

I would assume from your results that you were using CCI #10's. If so, virtually any of the other four should fit fine.

yes I believe they were cci, however thats all i can get locally. were do you get yours? and what do you use for a capper? Im afraid my arthritic fingers arent that well suited for the job.

I use a Ted Cash rifle capper (the one that looks like a snail, or apostrophe). I did use a Dremel to dress up the dispensing jaws to get a better fit on a couple of guns with extra tight nipple recesses. It seems to work fine, although I overdid the mod work and it drops a cap every once in a while.

I've been lucky enough to be able to purchase all 5 cap variations 'locally', meaning at both box stores and mom & pop places within about 150 miles. However, Dixie Gun Works sells all 5 via internet order: http://www.dixiegunworks.com/advanced_search_result.php?s=1&keywords=percussion+cap

if a person has a large supply of caps that are too small, one alternative could be to chuck each nipple in a drill and reduce the size with a file. i dont recommend this as a regular practice, but it would be another alternative, especially if your nipples would happen to be oversize. (nothing personal)

Well now 1927, I've never seen a flinter revolver.

I fine the Remington #10 caps fit all my revolvers and find them only at Bass Pro.

Thanks to all for the replies,Mykeal your info on the particular cap sizes really helped,as my local mom and pop gunsmiths store is just the next street over in the industrial park were i work. so he gladly exchanged the cci #10's for a can of # 11's of the same maker and they fit just fine. ill try to find the capper of which you speak.

Hey Jack, what kind of revolver do you have? The Remington clones don't like cappers all that well.

They are all colts; an 1851 navy Pietta , 1860 army Pietta and a Uberti 1847 walker.

JACK STEEL; I shoot a Pietta 1860. CCI #11's fit loose, so do the Rem #11's.
The Rem #10's fit good and snug, and a Pistol Snail Capper saves wear on the Thumbs and fingers.
Haven't had any hands on experience with the CCI #10's, but read posts that on the Pietta's they're very tight.
The Walker revolver, I'm not familiar with, so not sure if the nipples are the same size as on the others.

I use CCI #10 on my Pietta 1858. They go on with a firm press. They are pretty snug and I've never had any fall off.
