I know its legal on my Michigan permit but I just wonder if it's worth it since it would have to be left locked up in the car or brought in to the hotel unloaded in a case. I just don't want a theft or hassle from the PD if pulled over.

Also I know there are many more pistol free zones than in Michigan (certain parking areas etc.) that I could find myself in. We usually just park the car at the hotel and Uber or mass transit everywhere but I could end up driving somewhere unaware of restrictions. Rather not go to Illinois period but that's what I have to do to visit my son. Any thoughts or suggestions? Anyone been pulled over in Chicago with a weapon? Most likely go unarmed but I am not pleased as my trip also includes going through Detroit where I always carry.

Buy a pistol and leave at you son home . I have driven thru Chicago many time but never stopped . I will not stop or spend money in that state . My way or protesting .

Only you can answer the "is it worth it" question.

For me, yes, it is, just like carrying a gun is worth the hassle and expense and discomfort all of the rest of the time.

If having to lock the gun in your car or unload it to bring it inside your hotel room is too much of an inconvenience to be worth having your most effective self defense tool, then just don't bring it.

You should of course check the laws carefully yourself, and I am not a lawyer, but I'm fairly certain you are extremely unlikely to drive your car somewhere that having the gun inside the car is illegal. The one not-absolutely-dreadful thing about these laws in IL is that it is generally lawful to have it in your car in the parking lot of the off limits places (there are a lot of off limits places too)

Unfortunately if you drive through Chicago it can be impossible, practically speaking, to do so without spending money on tolls somewhere

There is a 'safe harbor' provision to the CCW law in IL that makes your vehicle a safe harbor for your weapon in parking lots and garages. If you have a CCW permit from your home state you can carry in your car and, in fact, virtually all public parking areas are covered so there is no special need to worry about being legal where you might be parking, in Chicago or anywhere else in Illinois. It is true that you must unload and case your weapons when taking them outside of your car. I don't see why you'd have a special reason to worry about being pulled over in Chicago or anywhere else.

Pay for his gas money to visit you, and take him shooting while he's there. Tell him to fill up with Michigan gas :) Win-win.
