With concealed carry having recently passed in Missouri, I'm looking for a way to safely store a handgun in my car, for those times when I have to enter a prohibited facility. Anyone have a favorite model?

What I'd like to do is bolt it into the trunk, close to the back seat. My rear seat flips down, so it'd be easy to unholster the weapon and secure it in the safe while exiting the car, then flip the seat back up.

I'd also be a little leery of drilling mount holes blindly (don't want to hit anything important under the trunk floor), what kind of place could do this kind of install?

I might not be much help knowing this, but what kind of car is it?

You said the back seat folds down, how rigid is the back of the seat? If you mount it towards the top of the back seat, it wont be noticable when you have the trunk open, and it will be closer when you get it out (assuming you can reach the release latch from your drivers seat).

Zach,

That's an interesting option I hadn't considered. Mounting something vertically, directly to the back side (trunk side) of the seat itself I'll have to look into. I could do that one myself since there'd be no danger of hitting anything important. It would be less secure though, I don't think I'd have a problem tearing something off of a seat back.

Thanks also for the other pointers. I don't think I could securely mount a safe in my console. It's too small, and that's the first place a window smasher would look anyway.

Oh, and the car is a Mustang. I'm also thinking about a cheap lefty holster that I can clip to the door map pocket, for easy reach while driving (I'm left-handed).

I'm not very familiar with the seats in newer stangs (the back seat folding down and there being a trunk leads me to think its a 94 or newer, i dont think the back seat in notchback foxes folds down, but could be wrong), I only have experiance with the folding seats in hatchbacks. I dont remeber how they come apart, but have took one apart to mount an amplifier and fire extinguisher. Use some good sized washers on the inside of the seat and it should be pretty secure. The metal strap on the FE hanger gave way before the back of the seat, its plastic, but pretty thick plastic. Ever tried to pull a fire extinguisher off the hanger without releasing the strap?

If you post at corral.net you might be able to get a few ideas from some fellow stangers.

I was also trying to find a safe for my car. I could not find one that I liked so here is what I did.
I bought two Brinks low profile cash drawer safes at Wal-Mart. (one for each car.) I then bought some foam and super glue. I cut the foam to fit on both the top and bottom of the safe and glued them in place. Now I have a small thin safe that will hold one pistol that will fit either under my seat or any where in the trunk. I can even slide it under the mat in my trunk and put it next to the spare tire in my car.
