I posted this on another site, but will try here also.

Yesterday I was shown a Carcano Model 1891 carbine, made at Terni and dated 1937. It had a most unusual bolt, which is almost certainly not original to that gun, but which is very definitely a Carcano bolt.

What is unusual is that the extractor is not above the right lug as in the normal bolt, but through it. The right lug actually has a rectangular hole through it (considerably weakening it), through which the extractor fits. The extractor itself is similar to the normal extractor except for the body being narrower and the hook smaller.

This is a new one on me, and I wonder if anyone else has seen anything similar. I suspect it may be an early design that was changed, for obvious reasons, but have no way to confirm that. As I said, I doubt it was original to that 1937 carbine, but have no idea where it came from. The only marking on the bolt is an oval mark on the top of the bolt root which appears to have some letter(s) inside, but they are unreadable.

Before anyone begins speculating about conversions and the like, I will say there is no sign of any conversion or change; there is no filled in area or any sign of welding. The bolt is as it was made.
