I picked up a copy of Readers Digest at my Doctor's office this morning. It contained an article describing an incident that occurred at a car wash. A woman was wearing a long scarf wrapped around her neck a couple of times and ends that nearly reached the ground.

She got too close to the machinery running the brushs and the end of her scarf caught in the gears. She was dragged up tight to the equipment and could not extricate herself.

A male patron of the car wash saw the situation, jumped out of his car, and pulled "a Puma folding knife with a 3 1/2 inch blade." He was able to get the knife between her head and the gears and cut the scarf.

The woman was unconscious so he administered mouth to mouth and revived her. She had scrapes and bruises and serious burns/abrasions around her neck but she recovered completely.

RD had pictures of the woman and the man with the knife. I know from submitting an article that the Digest is very thorough in documenting the articles they print. I didn't think to write down the issue of the magazine.

Just another reason to keep a good edge on your pocket knife.

Yikes. Another reason also to not put things around your darned neck. I tell you, I am not a fan of scarfs or ties. They just don't make any sense to me, and are a huge hazard.

Good story, and with winter approaching a timely reminder.

Scarves sorta creep me out too... Pre-tied noose. Visions of an encounter with a snowblower..... A real hazard in this neck of the woods!

I remember some very scary stories that involved business men wearing dress ties and industrial paper shredders.

Glad she made it out ok though.

My grandfather was a Post Master who once got his tie caught in a mail sorter!

Fortunately, his sense of fashion was so keen, that the clip on his tie snapped free and he was unharmed! :D

Conwict, I'll see if I can find a link to the story and pictures, or at least information on the issue in which the article apeared.

Thanks, Speedo66. I was trying to remember the name of the woman who got her scarf entangled in the rear wheel of a convertable.

This brings to mind an incredibly sad story I read in the Boston Globe a while back. A woman was choked to death when her scarf got caught in an escalator. Two people tried to help, a father and his son, IIRC. One stayed with her, and the other tried to get a pair of scissors or anything to cut her free. By the time an ambulance got their, she was already dead.

The new fashion is to have the scarf looped into a noose (not just wrapped) around your neck. I mean how stupid can one be? All a BG have to do is yank hard on the thing and he's got you like a dog on a choke collar while slamming your head against the concrete.
