I carry at home and don't answer the door unless I know who it is--I'm not interested in anything they'd be selling anyway.

Fire extinguishers and first aid kits are also in my home and vehicles. In over 20 years the first aid kits have never been used for anything other than for Band-aids. After over twenty years of keeping fire extinguishers I finally got to use them three times in less than one year to stop house fires (in their early stages) in other peoples houses.

Chances are I'll never use my defensive weapons and training, but I am comforted and do sleep more soundly knowing I have that option.

On me or within diving distance.

As said earlier, lightweight j-frames are too easy not carry these days. I have a j-frame or a Kahr PM9 either in my pocket or nearby all of the time.

Good, fair minded criminals only exist in the movies and within the warped minds of their families and friends.

How about the guy who kicks in the back door or window? A gun near the front door may not help much.

The salesman who sold us new doors a few years ago is a former policeman, and he says that entry from the back (particularly from a back porch that offers some concealment) is more likely than a problem at the front door.

+! for JDoe's response.

I dont carry in my home. But, at any given time I am within 2 seconds of a condition 3 weapon that is out of sight of any would-be intruder.

Ive been scrutinized brutally on THR for this. Apparently keeping a condition 3 glock stored under the cushion of your couch is a sin according to some. But I do it anyway. My current living situation allows for it. No children at home.

I have my nitestand gun, my couch gun, my other couch gun, behind the front door shotgun, office gun, kitchen gun, ...you get the point. Oh, and the shower gun. I keep a Glock in the shower. Its the only handgun that doesnt seem to be affected by the humid conditions......:neener:

I will normally carry with me in the house. If for some reason I am not I will have something readily accessible to me. I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Full marks for strategy. Slight difference of opinion on tactics. Given that most CQC encounters in the home are going to be at a distance of 10 to 15 feet, your first likely weapon will be your own two hands and feet. Maybe, if you hear a funny noise and arm yourself to investigate you'll be armed and cocked and ready when the target comes into view. I've certainly prepared substantially for this possibility.

However, extreme CQC situations may require use of immediate tools at hand, including (but not limited to) escrima sticks, staffs, sai, nunchaku, knives, swords, jutte, and some more exotic weapons. One of the more interesting items are these magnet balls. Affixed to the side of an iron rack, you can grab them and hurl a pound of metal that stay closely together. No matter where you are in your home, there should be good tools at close hand. I think of the firearms as "nice to haves" but keep lots of alternatives handy, too. The downside is the training time necessary to be effective with hand weapons but the payoff is well worth it. The sooner you start, the sooner you'll be where you want to be.

I don't have any kids, just me and he woman in the house. If I was single, I'd definitely have guns strategically placed out of sight, all over the house. But that would absolutely freak the girl out (even though she shoots too), so all but one stay in the safe. :(

I do carry in the house.

I also like to have a dedicated "desk gun" so if I put my CCW in the safe I have very quick access to a firearm while I'm typing this :) I spend a lot of time on the computer so it's nice to have a firearm within reach.

Plus, I think desks "require" a pistol or revolver stashed in them somewhere, right? At least that's how they do it in the movies:D!

Pic attached of my desk gun: .45 Colt.

I usually carry in my apartment, and additionally, I've also got a shotgun in the closet and a makarov inside a hollowed out book on my bookshelf.

Carry at home, h*ll yeah

About 15 yrs. ago I testified against a criminal I had arrested,a carrer criminal at that.He got 15 yrs. and I just found out that he is out and lives about 20 miles from me.The fed. prosecutor was kind enough to let me know in advance, but i have family now and have retired due to a disability. They said they could not send any recent photos of him,but you can bet I carry if i'm awake and sometimes when i'm not haha

I carry whenever leaving my house. While inside, if I don't have a J Frame in my pocket, I have something within reach at all times.
It's not a matter of living in a bad area - I don't. Home invasions and the like do not only happen in bad areas.

Desk gun in home office. It will also fit inside a file drawer.

if u have a decent door ... and manual bolts on all entries,
... why not keep a handgun next to the door?

If people are swinging through yer windows and the
the front door is rammed in ... you better not draw ...

next to door ... wallet and EDC toolset.
Know your situation and your tools ..
... and always keep them in the same places.
