Knock on the door

The "meat salesman" is usually a scam.

The story goes that he has a great deal of "premium" merchandise that a client refused, or he has the stuff in a truck with a broken refrigerator.

He might show you a good steak, and then sell you 100 pounds more, already wrapped. A story on "60 Minutes" showed that this meat is actually slaughter house scrap.

I figure turn about is fair play. I tell them that I'm out of medication and I'm feeling "too jumpy" to talk right now...:D

You called 911 because someone knocked on your door??? I don't agree with that. 911 is an emergency line

The Sheriff Dept. quits answering the phone at 5 P.M. All calls then go to 911.

You opened the steel door to a stranger at 9:20pm
...

Yep. People stop by here all the time for directions. Why did it seem suspicious to me? The time for one. Seems a little late for door to door sales, add to that the fact that it was pouring rain, that there was another person in the van, that the van was not a reefer van like legit salesmen use, that there were no markings on the van,the condition of the van, the appearance of the so-called salesman and the fact that he kept his right hand inside the tube pocket of his hoodie. Add to the fact that they stopped in front of my house for an extended period of time while I was talking to 911. There have been a rash of burglaries lately and the cops say that the thieves are using police scanners to keep tabs on the P.D.

If you hadn't been doped up on cold meds - you would have thought to call the police to file a false report about a man with a gun..
.

That report would have been true, I did have a gun.

Meat, seafood, stereo speakers, magazines 'for the kids' - seen 'em all, at any time of day or night. If I answer the door at all (daylight), if they don't take the first "no, thank you", they get a good look at Mr. 1911 or whatever the COD (carry of the day) is, holstered or in hand, not pointed, and that usually ends the conversation. I then call the neighbors.

I have a "No Soliciting" sign at the foot of the driveway, and I'm just not that patient with people who can't follow simple instructions. I got back into firearms/CCW ten years ago when a couple of stoners tried to push in after I wouldn't let them in to 'use the phone' when they tried to fake a break-down under the street light in front of the house . . . .

Then what happened? How did you repel these miscreants?

QUOTE: "Wow. There is some paranoid actions out there. You know how I know who's at the door? I answer it. "

I would say that 95% of the home invasion stories I read about in the paper or see on the T.V. news, start W/ " I opened the door and they forced their way in " If I don't know you I don't open the door. If that's paranoid so be it.

Tends to cut down on meat salesmen taking up my time too.

P.S. guys I NEVER saw an honest guy make a living at that racket, something to remember when/if you're dealing W/ them. The company I worked for actually told us to get in the house and don't leave till they buy something.

I never answer the door. It is a waste of my time to do so. Remember that action beats reaction even when you "think" you are prepared.

Knock, knock, knock...

Homeowner: What the "Hades" do you want?!

Fool on porch: <<Pause>> I...I...I'm selling steaks...ya wanna buy some?"

Homeowner: Oh my pitbulls love steak! Just a minute, I'll send them right out. <<Whistles to dogs>> Hey...wait! Where you going?

The only time I got a knock on the door at 0200 was when a guy kicked the girl out of the car cause she wouldnt have sex with him and he drove her all the way out here. I drove her back and we found him. I used the cell to call the Sherriff and had the guy sweat it out in jail, never heard from anyone about that night again.

My wife and I are really solitary people. We have no friends that would come knocking unexpectedly. When I get a knock on the door and see a strange vehicle in the drive I go to "Condition Orange." If what I see is at all suspicious, I go to "Condition Red." I always have a sixgun with me when I answer the door.

As one poster pointed out...many atacks start with a knock on the door. You read about cases in The Armed Citizen every month.

You just described us exactly... ;)

Ninety-nine knocks on the door might be innocent, but it only takes one to kill you and/or rape your wife :uhoh:

Though we seldom get knocks on the door, because either we or the dogs nearly always hear anyone driving up our 1/8 mile long driveway. So if it is a friend or otherwise legitimate, I usually just open the door before they can knock.

I have on occasion met strangers with a rifle in my hands, and it hasn't been totally unjustified either.

Good one Doc... That is exactly how I am answer the door from now on.

This is actually the front door to my home. This has not been photo-shopped. As you can see, the front access has been "bricked in." About 9 or 10:00PM I get really owly, and as you know from pictures of my end table, I keep several "tools" near my TV channel changer. If idiots knock after a reasonable hour it's their fault if things go awry.

Even our good friends call first after dark.

One is wise to pay attention to the "streets", just as animals do in the animal kingdom.

My contentions as I have shared before, and will again, is my concerns has always been entering and exiting a structure and answering the door.

Perceptions- What do I want to be Perceived as?

WE had some legit folks selling steaks, they did not wear uniforms or badges, and the small trucks varied by make and model, still the freezer on the trucks were all similar.

Some were shiny metal, mounted to the truck like a camper shell, and some were nothing more than small freezers, one can buy at any appliance store.
These were strapped in, and had a lock, and plugged up while parked, and unplugged out making rounds, and the steaks and other meats stayed frozen for so many hours.

Pretty much a local idea, and it was legit, and nice.
They had routes and customers, and it was pre arranged to come after folks got home from work, anywhere from 6:30 to about 9:30 pm.

This allowed folks to get home, and about 9 - 9:30 was understood folks had kids to ready for bed or whatever.

There were some other legit companies doing similar, and like the steak and meat folks, elderly appreciated this, and often times their route was during the day, being retired most times.

Retirement centers, had days they expected such folks to come.
Seriously, are really nice service for these folks.
One did all sorts of food from ice cream to pizza to meat , to casseroles to pies and cobblers and so much more.

Now these folks would leave extra information, menus and the like with customers, or do a neighborhood leaflet on doors, or the like.
The contacted complex management, the local LEO , BBB and even AG of the State.
This information was on the leaflets, and other brochures.
Just call the local Police , or BBB ( number was provided) and check them out.

The demise was not that of customers, or shady deals, or any wrong doing of these persons.

Criminals were.
They armed robbed , vandalized and targeted these small independent delivery persons.
Insurance, liability, and employee safety dictated it was best to close these independent home delivery services.

Same reason some drug stores do not do offer home delivery anymore.
Pretty sad, especially with our aging society.

Heck, I was recovering from surgery, and I appreciated these folks coming by, as I did the local drug store and grocery store bringing me what I needed, when I was down.

Yes, one needs to be responsible for safety, I had code words with the delivery folks, as I knew them and they me.
One word meant all was fine, another meant they were being forced and used to gain access to me and mine.

I do this code word with elderly and physically limited I run with.
Home deliveries have a place, and there are still small town, or mom and pops that do this service.
It might be the drug store owner him or her self, that runs by after work, and it is dark depending on time of year.

Code words work both ways, one means all is well, another might mean the druggist is being forced to gain entry to a residence, or can be the druggist is being targeted and needs the customer's assistance in staying safe.

Just other ways to look at all this is all...

I don't have any problems with situations like this. I have a small window in the door and a locked storm door outside of that. I look at the person, if I don't see someone I know or a PD uniform, I turn on the porch light, turn it back off (lets them know I'm home) and then ignore them.

If they persist, I grab my Mosberg 600 and rack the slide. Has NEVER failed to cure the problem. :D

I work nights, and except the semi-retired neighbor across the street, am often the only one home in our neighborhood.

I write the plates and vehicle/personnel descriptions down down first; I usually see them before they get to my door. I make a point to have my hand on the folder clipped to my front pocket, and my body behind the door. (I have other preps in place also...) I have sometimes seen them ring others' bells, then look in door/front windows, while trying to look like they aren't. Usually after I answer the door, they leave the neighborhood, as they realize I'm aware of what they are doing. Saying "If I want some, I've already written down the number off the truck" puts them on notice also.

My Dad was a cop, and taught me to write down/memorize important facts surrounding suspicious situations.

After reading this thread and thinking about my own expereince with shady "meat salesmen", I decided to write a "scam alert" to my friends and family decribing the operation and cautioning them not to open the door to them.

Many responded with similar stories of their own. I had no idea how wide spread this meat scam is.

The shocker was the email I got from my Mom this morning. Right around the time I was sending out my scam alert - she had someone come to her door with a big bottle of "rug cleaner". My 86-year-old Mother, who lives alone, opened the door to this character! My Mom is smart and still has her wits - but she really let down her guard this time. After he gave his spiel, she told him she wasn't interested. He stood in her doorway and was very persistant about wanting to come in to "demonstrate". She repeated her lack of interest - he insisted it would only take a few minutes. Finally - she convinced him to leave.

I don't usually admonish my Mother for anything, as she is very good at taking care of herself. But I had to tell her she blew it this time and made her promise to NEVER...EVER open the door to a stranger again. she is unarmed and elderly and alone and I worry. She lives close by - but I'm still minutes away if anything ever happened. I should ask her if she would be willing to have a firearm - but I know the answer.

Guy says that he is selling steaks and do I want some, I reply that I am not interested. Now I know that door to door salesmen still exist but i felt this was kind of late to be peddling

This is common with some food-delivery. They deliver steaks or food to a customer who ordered them, then the drivers have an incentive to try to sell off extra inventory to neighbors.

It sounds like he made a late delivery but still thought it was ok (even at 9:30 at night) to try to peddle steaks. Obviously not very considerate. Some young people today don't realize the insult it is to solicit (regardless of what it is) at night. In fact, I don't like anyone coming to my door selling things so I feel for you.

Was there a chance he was casing you, sure, but most likely it was bad salesmanship and judgement. You should have asked for his companies name or his name. Either he stammers and can't tell you (then you know he is a crook) or he provides you the name and you can then complain about him.

* And in the future you may want to call the regular local police number, not 911. 911 is for an emergency- not a hunch.

If I'm not expecting someone or don't recognize the doorbell ringer, I don't even open the door anymore.
After all, it's never anybody trying to tell me I've won the lottery. :)

The guys that deliver food, like Schwan's, have a certain route, are a legitmate business and utilize refrigerated trucks. They try and garner new business, but there is no pressure to move "extra food" for fear of spoilage or sink to unannouced late night visits. Our Schwan's guy came on the same day at the same time as part of his route. We had invited him, not the other way around.

These "steak salesmen" are a known scam.

This cold really kicked my butt. Finally got out today and talked to some of the neighbors. Several report seeing the van, but the van didn't stop at their residence. I am familiar with Schwan's and several other local mobile meat sellers, all of which have a reefer truck or van and a company logo. Most times they park in local box store parking lots and usually have brochures or price lists available. A beat up van minus a muffler doesn't seem to fit in with the legit salesmen that I am aware of.

As stated before 911 is the only way to contact the police after 5 p.m. In fact it is about the only way to contact them at any time. It is not uncommon for people to call 911 for controlled burns or to report livestock at large.

Interesting, eh? Now they know to watch for it. I'd be appreciative if a neighbor came to my door to let me know about a strange van in the area.

Glad you're feeling better, by the way.

Wow, talk about serious reactions. Good friend from college made his best money selling door to door between 7pm and 10pm. Didn't work any other hours. He chalked up his good sales to people being relaxed, fed, and ready to say yes so they could go back to the tube. I'm not saying you shouldn't be suspicious but he could have very well been selling steaks. You'll never know since you shooed him away.

That's just peachy that your friend found people relaxed and ready to say yes between 7pm and 10pm. He obviously didn't come to my door. It doesn't matter what he was selling. If I didn't call him - that means I didn't want whatever he was selling. If I want to buy something - I initiate the transaction.

BTW...What was he selling that was in such high demand by people watching TV after dinner?

I remember my first meat salesman. The wife and I had just moved into our first house. (Still there)

Guy knocks on door. No, sir, my carpets don't need steam cleaning... they're brand new.

So as he's walking away, kinda down-trodden, he hollers back: "Don't suppose you wanna buy any steak, do ya?"

C'mon back inside, buddy. Lets talk bidness.

Ended up with a case of NY strips and a case of bacon-wrapped filet mignon for $55. I've worked in plenty of steakhouses, I know a good cut of beef when I see it.

Man, I wish he'd come back.

Now I've never had a magazine crackhead come by my house, but one did visit my buddy when I was helping him install his surround sound.

I could hear their whole conversation. I was stuck behind the entertainment console, but it was laughable at best.

Then I heard my buddy said he'd take THREE SUBSCRIPTIONS CASH!!! At like 200% over newsstand!!!!

I was screaming from behind the TV "I'll kill you myself Tom if you give that F***ing crackhead one dollar!"

Ironically, the police showed up right then and there. Seems this guy had been bothering the whole neighborhood, and someone decided to drop a dime.
