carry load lube over or under

I was wondering what a good way to lube a revolvers chambers for carry for hiking or whatever. I usually lube with borebutter over the bullet with a lubed wad beneath but borebutter seems too runny for carry. Any ideas or suggestions? Also I read somewhere that you can put lube under the ball over the wad just put powder wad borebutter then ball and that seemed like a good idea. Any thoughts?

why not shoot them as originally intended. Dry.

A single lubed felt wad between the powder and ball. Cabela's sells a lubed wad for revolvers that's dry lubed; that is, it feels dry to the touch and does not contaminate the powder but does provide a very effective lube to keep fouling soft. It's perfect for carry.

A thin, non-melting. home made, Lube Wad, based on paper Towel dipped in molten Beeswax, the correct sized 'discs' cut out with a correct size Gasket Punch or Hole Punch, between Ball and Powder, should be fine...and will not make a mess. This also displaces next to no Powder since it is 'thin'.

'Dry' would be fine also...as TheRodDoc mentions.

It boils down to technique, any of the above methods well work and be safe. My personal choice is the use a grease cookie between powder and ball.

There are some really stiff lubricants that you can either make or purchase, although I haven't seen the commercial stuff for sale recently. There was some stuff about the consitency of caramel that didn't melt below 200 degrees, as I recall it was slightly tan in color.

I've been using a grease cookie between powder and ball as well. But one day I forgot to put one in so I just placed it over the ball and made sure it was tamped down well over the ball. Afterward I got to thinking that this would probably eliminate any contamination of the powder if one decided to keep the gun loaded for an extended period of time. Would this still provide lubrication as well as prevent chain fires?
