I have my Handgun Carry Permit, I have been carrying since it came last week. Last week when I went to the range I packed my other handguns into their cases and into the rangebag and stowed them as usual in the locked toolbox on the back of my pickup for the journey.
My question is, do I need to do that now I have a permit or can I transport them on the seat next to me?
I will be packing one carry weapon, with two unloaded, cased and bagged handguns beside me. I don't plan any stops on the journey if that has any importance.
The reason I ask is that to fit the rangebag in my toolbox I have to remove a few powertools and leave them in my garage, obviously I'd rather not do this if I don't have to.
Thanks.

If you have a permit, you can put as many as you want in the car with you... just make sure, if you get pulled over, you tell the officer you have a permit, you are carrying, and be able to name where EVERY ONE of them is... they hate to be surprised... :D

Thanks both, particularly Steelharp (did you ever sell that GLOCK?).
I assumed this would be the case but I don't like to make assumptions where guns are involved.
I will be sure to tell any LEO where they are and of my permit status, I plan to hand over my license and permit if I am ever stopped.

Make sure they aren't visable unless your state has open carry. Here in Florida, even with a CCW, a visibal handgun will get you a charge of "brandishing." However, unless you have a limit to the number of concealed guns you can carry at once, all you need to do to be legal is toss a jacket over them.

You're welcome... yes, the Glock is going to a fine local gent on the 27th... personally, I'm thrilled about that! In TN, just for info, "brandishing" with a permit is sticking it in someone's face... a gun, not the permit... :D You can walk around with it in your hand, if you want to. However, if you have no permit, you better not show a gun at all... or have one on you, for that matter...

My Carry Permit Tutor (note the omission of 'Concealed') told us that we were able to openly wear our handguns under TN law, but it was unwise to do so as the general populace are unaware of this fact and will call the Police, and when they call they will say 'there is a man with a gun', not 'there is a man with a carry permit with a holstered gun'.
So I conceal, but I have seen open carry.

I have open carried, when I used to work at a gun shop, and ran to get lunch or something... but I conceal 99% of the time.

real_name,

In accordance with TN Codes Annotated, it is legal for a Handgun Carry Permit holder to carry as many handguns as they desire to carry. They may be loaded or unloaded, holstered, encased, on your person, in your vehicle, concealed, or carried openly.

While it is perfectly legal to carry openly, it is rarely wise to do so. I carry openly from time to time, but only in circumstaces where I am reasonably sure that I am not going to cause a scene, get myself hurt, or have the police called. I caution my students to think about what the reactions of the public would be when they see a man with a gun.

BTW, where did you take your permit class? Feel free to PM me if you prefer.

real name,

I open carry better than half the time I carry. That includes going into places such as banks. Nobody cares. I have carried downtown, into urban areas, out to eat, into dentists offices, into banks, into non alcohol serving restaurants, into church, and on. Openly. Nobody cares. (Granted, this is the Chattanooga area. You are in Nashville. That said, it is legal, so cops can't do squat.)

The fear of some gutless liberal coward calling 911 is greatly overblown.

I have carried openly around Nashville occasionally. Doesn't seem to bother anybody for the most part. I don't think I would walk up or down Second avenue on a Friday night doing it, but you won't catch me down there anyway.

The only time I can ever recall anybody saying anything was a trip to the local Super Wally World opening day for deer last year. It was about 3:45 or 4:00 a.m. and I walked into the store to buy a insulated pair of camo coveralls (don't ask, I wasn't the only one). I walked past one of Metro's finest as he was drinking coffee with one of the Wally World guys. He smiled and said something to the effect of "I like 1911's too, but you might scare the ladies at the registers if you don't cover up". I asked if he was telling me or asking me. He smiled and said "asking".

I told him I appreciated the advice, and went on my way. As I walked out with my coveralls, I said goodbye. He smiled and went back to drinking his coffee.

Once, I was guilty of being the obnoxious one. I was standing in line to pay for gas, when I noticed the fellow in front of me had a an empty belt slide holster on. I leaned forward and quietly whispered, "Excuse me, but I think you lost your gun". He spun around and took one look at me with mine still on my hip and laughed. He accused me of having an overly educated backside and mentioned I was crazy for open carry. No one else payed any attention.

Not a big deal. Gotta love Tennessee.

I hope TN stays like it is; we have an awful lot of folks moving here from CA... enough of them and their influence, and it could start to look really glum around here... I'm just sayin'...

A buddy of mine is thinking about getting his carry permit just so he doesn't have to bother with seperating ammo and weapons when he heads to my place to shoot.

I think it best that folks that aren't LEO's conceal their handguns in public places. I also have a permit mostly so I don't have to worry about whether or not a gun is loaded (or where the shells are relative to the gun) when I transport them to a shooting outing. In the field, I think it perfectly natural to carry a firearm whether it be a long gun or handgun (or both).

You may transport firearms any way you want with the permit. I still think it a good idea to throw a blanket, towel, or jacket over them inside the vehicle. I don't think it good to advertise unless that is your intention.

NOTE

Your TN Carry Permit is for handguns only:thus carrying a loaded longarm "with intent to go about armed" is illegal permit or no.I'm hoping this will eventually be changed but am not holding my breath.
As I understand the law there is no legal definition of 'concealed' which is why your permit states "Carry" & not "Concealed Carry".
