Does anyone know how police react if they find out that a civilian is carrying a taser? I know that tasers are legal to carry in most states without a permit, but police sometimes will randomly ask to scan your drivers license if they think you're suspicious, and they'll sometimes ask if you have any weapons as a precaution (I used to be a door-to-door salesman, so sometimes people would call the police just to be on the safe side because they saw me walking around in a small neighborhood). I was thinking about getting an air taser as a practical self-defense means, and I am wondering if it would just be more trouble because a police officer may ask if I have any weapons sometime? I asked someone who just barely started police academy. He said that he would yell at me to get on the ground and put my hands behind my back and then handcuff me. He sounded quite serious about it. But then, he's one of those macho guys who always says that he'll shoot someone right away if they try such and such on him when he becomes a cop. He also just started the academy, so he may or may not know as much as to how an officer would react. The thing is that I have a back problem because I was in a bad car accident a while ago, and I wouldn't want a police officer treating me like that if I was a law abiding citizen and was compliant if he were to ask me questions about why I happened to be in a certain neighborhood. Does anyone know in real life how a police officer would react if he thought I was suspicious (such as in door-to-door sales) and asked for my driver's license and if I had any weapons on me?

that guy is looking to lose his badge before he even gets it. Police officers eill not react in that way unless you make suspicious movements during the encounter. otherwise when they ask say yes i am carrying an air taser usually theyll say just keep you hands away from it.

You are lucky, in the UK if the Police find so much as a pen knife on a boy scout they will consider an arrest 'to let the Courts' sort it out.

Matt, I know that if it's illegal to carry, then I shouldn't be carrying one. But what about most of the states where it's legal to carry one without a permit. If you're a law abiding citizen, don't make any suspicious moves, and are compliant with everything the officer says, wouldn't that be excessive force of the officer? To discuss further about those states who ban air tasers or put arbitrary limits on pepper spray, see "State Laws restricting pepper spray and air tasers?!" under "Legal and Political" under "Social Situations"

If its legal, no cop will give you a hard time about it. Your friend simply has his head up his backside and hopefully it will be pulled out by the time he becomes a full time cop.

Obviously you can't say "I have a tazer" and draw it real fast, but thats just common sense that that sort of thing would get you shot. Bottom line is, carry it legaly, don't act like a moron, and you will have nothing to worry about.

If the taser is legal in your state, you have nothing to worry about. If you are asked by L.E., by all means tell them you have it. Don't make sudden movements to show it off. They will ask where it is and TELL them, don't show.

Most will not bother with it, other than maybe lifting your shirt to make sure it is not a firearm. I will tell you, if you are acting odd and make rapid movements to show it off, you better practice your lead dodging skills.
