Carrying Dad's gun, in memoriam..

When I got out of the Army in 1969 I went to work for a local utility. One of the first guys I met was an ex Marine (I know, there is no such thing as an ex Marine) whom we will call "Ted". Ted and I became very close as we both shared a love of hunting and the outdoors in general. About 10 years ago Ted passed. I was honored to be a pall bearer at his funeral. After the funeral, his widow approached me with a soft sided gun case. She said "Here, I think Ted would have wanted you to have this."

Inside the case was Ted's Remington Model 512 Targemaster. The gun had seen a hard life as Ted believed firearms were tools to be used and not coddled. I memory of him, I had the rifle stripped and reblued, I finished the stock and a machinist friend and I drilled and tapped it for scope mounting.

I take it out every fall and collect a few squirrels for a meal of fried squirrel and gravy, our favorite meal together. As long as I am alive, he will be remembered and honored.
