Motivating dad to carry

My father is an avid shooter, and is the one I credit with starting the gun bug in me. When we lived in CT he had his CHL and carried off and on back there. In 1991 we moved to Oregon, he has had his CHL out here since we moved and he makes sure to renew it in a timely manner. But he has NEVER carried out here at all. He has all the classic excuses, its uncomfortable, its a pain in the ass, and my personal favorite "I have made it 49yrs without needing it". He is most definitely pro-gun but just not into CCW.

Personally when I look at his equipment I think his largest issue is that he does not have any new holsters. He has an old leather and sheepskin ankle holster for his .38 detective special. Well as an OWB leather holster for his ASTRA .380. Those are the two of his handguns that would be considered CCW'able his others being of the 6in barrel variety.

So how do I convince him to at least give it another shot maybe with a more modern nylon or kydex set up.

I don't know how you could convince him to carry. I can only explain why I choose to be armed. It's not for me, it's for my wife and children. Personally, I'd probably just as soon take a bullet or a beating as give one. I can't stand the thought of dumping lead into someone's insides. But my wife needs her husband. My kids need their dad. I'll use deadly force against Satan himself to protect my family. THEY are the reason (not just for carry) for most everything I do.

Buy him one, or two, holsters that fit his gun, maybe like some kind of clip-0n, that he can move, easily, to find the most comfy spot for whatever he may be doing. Like driving, vs walking, etc..

They're not that expensive and, when one goes 49yrs without any problems, I can see where he is coming from, but it really comes down to "change" and most don't like that beyond the forty's..

Give it a try, you might be surprised, and so might he..

maybe if you bought him a nice new holster and/or a gunbelt for his birthday or something. That could persuade him into giving it a try. I'm not suggesting trying to guilt him into carrying because you spent money on a rig for him but more so just showing him that with the proper equipment it will be much more comfortable.

Ok so some good suggestions have come about, also this works well because I just applied for my CHL and maybe my carrying will get his thoughts rolling. And oh I dont mind spending some money on a holster for him at all. He is a great guy and certainly worth the price of a holster even if he only uses it occasionally.

ok so why do you want him to carry? HE was the ability to carry, right? You said he has a permit. Its his decision, maybe he just doesnt want to at this time. He obviously thinks enough to renew and keep a chl permit, so he is not going anit gun. Let it be his decision.

I can sympathize with you as I used to think like this up until a very short time ago. To be honest, I hate the idea of using violence even to defend myself and it's a thing that I'd only do with the utmost of reluctance.
But then I got to thinking: What would happen if every decent person on Earth refused to defend his/herself?

I can understand the argument that 49 years without needing a weapon for defense, but just suppose if those 49 years were meant for your father to prepare himself?

I am not sure we should be 'convincing' anyone to carry. Doing so is a pretty personal choice. I think folks should handle that decision on their own.

Buy him a membership in US Concealed Carry Association, including a subscription to Concealed Carry magazine -- perhaps as a birthday or holiday gift.

I want to clarify, I dont EVER want to force my father to carry. Simply promoting the idea. Just like many of us would promote the right to own firearms without the requirement to own them.

Buy him a nice belt holster, and magazine combo. I am sure that it will help motivate him. A pocket holster is also a good idea.

Buy him a keltec P3AT in 380 or perhaps a p32 with a belt clip (no need for bulky holster) very light good on your pocket $$ wise and better than a can of mace. I'm sympathetic with your dad i just refuse to carry any anvils in my waist so I'm always in the lookout for small and lightweight pocket canons

It's a touchy proposal to try to talk someone into carrying, and too much pressure can backfire.
