Carrying into Canada

"...I am "ok" to carry concealed into Canada..." No. You can't even have one in your possession without our licence. Get caught trying to enter Canada with a handgun and you will be arrested, charged and turned over to Homeland Security who will possibly also arrest you for trying to export a firearm without a permit.
"...however, exceptions MIGHT be made on a case-by-case basis for "hunting type" handguns..." No. No hunting with handguns is permitted anywhere in Canada. If you're just passing through, you still need our Restricted licence that can only be obtained by taking a course with a Canadian instructor. CCW or any other foreign permit or training means nothing.
"...Canada couldn't care less that you're a cop in the USA...." Right. Unless you're here while working. Even then it's only if absolutely necessary. Even the Secret Service cannot carry here.
Do not believe the nonsense posted on officer.com. You are not a cop in Canada any more than you are out of Maysville, MO. and will get no special treatment.
A prohibited firearm is a 4" or less barreled handgun, any .25 or .32 calibre handgun that is not specified on our list of non-evil .32 cal, high end target pistols plus specific long guns that don't apply here. Mostly modern battle rifles.
"...becomes effective April 3..." Has nothing to do with Canada or Canadian law. The only thing ITAR has anything to do with is causing gigantic headaches for any Canadian trying to get parts, reloading components that aren't readily available here and other like stuff.

as I recall, there was also paperwork required for the US gov to allow you to bring it BACK In with you.

I believe my original question has been answered more than once over. I do thank you for the replies and answers to my original question.

I was never asking for "special treatment" of any kind nor would I expect it, regardless of who I may or may not be. I want to abide by and respect the laws wherever I travel and am trying to do the right thing so as to keep myself or family out of any trouble with any state or country. I may not agree with, but I will still respect and abide by another state or country's laws pertaining to firearms.

I am looking forward to visiting Minnesota and Canada and am especially looking forward to doing a little fishing while there.

.becomes effective April 3..." Has nothing to do with Canada or Canadian law.

Not quite, it may not be Canadian law, but it is US-based and affects anyone from the US taking a gun out of the country for any reason.

Going bear hunting in Canada? Dove shooting in Argentina? Safari in Africa? Competition shooting in Europe? If you are a US citizen, you now have to jump through some hoops.

OP - if you are visiting family, perhaps you can leave your gun with them in MN while you cross the border, or rent a safe deposit box at a bank for the shortest amount of time and leave it in there.

I'll sum up Canada's carry law: you can't. Even as a Canadian citizen it is very difficult to OWN firearms let alone carry. Much less of a chance as an American.
