Ok this will probably make the seasoned reloaders roll their eyes but..
I ran out of case lube the other day , I usually use hornady one shot .
so I got a piece of rag and thinly spread some motor oil (castrol gtx) on it , then I rolled my cases ala case lube pad on it and resized them .... it worked great !!
after the rounds were assembled I wiped them with a dry rag , shot 20 to test out the load and had no detrimental effects .
Sooo.... my question is , are there any real reasons why I cannot or should not use motor oil as case lube ?
As long as no one has any proven reason why I shouldnt do this then I think I will continue to do so a little goes a long way and its cheap !! :neener:

Petroleum oil will contaminate powder rendering it inert. If you are very careful not to get any inside the case you may be just fine but there's a better chance you'll get a bullet stuck in your barrel from the primer with a bunch of unburned powder behind it.

GTX is not synthetic and im only lubing the outside sparingly but good to know that there IS a reason that people dont do it :uhoh:

You could have some lanolin on hand.. since the Dillon case lube is Lanolin in an alcohol base. I tend to use the Dillon lube on rifles and the one shot on pistol brass.

No dont have any of that it was motor oil or wd40 and wd is too expensive I'll just get some more case lube next time I go out thanks guys.

Let me guess....

You are reloading straight wall pistol cases...

Try it on bottle neck rifle cases and report back your results.:D

My single experence trying motor oil as a case lube was over 35 years ago. It resulted in a stuck case and I've never tried it again.

There's no magic in case lubes and no refinery makes any specific concoction for our use so other things than those relabeled by loading tool makers are available.

For a commercial case lube I pefer any of the waxes and apply it with my fingers. Imperial Die Wax is the most common but other soft waxes will also work. Kiwi "Neutral" shoe wax, Kiwi "Mink Oil" and "Sno-Proof" boot treatment are all soft waxes that look and work indentical to Imperial.

All versions of oils and greases are too messy and too difficult to remove from the cases for my taste.

I'd imagine motor oil is so viscous you'd get a lot of dented case shoulders. Evidently "personal lubricant" works well and is in fact pretty similar to case lube, though if I ever find myself using KY to reload ammo it'll be time for a real re-evaluation of my priorities. :D

lmao

If I'd been drinking you'd owe me one too :D Actually I was reloading .303 Brit , no problems with the first 20 :) I have spray on cooking oil , maybe I'll try that
