Does anyone have a favorite load for a Marlin Guide Gun (45-70) using 405 grain or 300 grain cast bullets? I've got several loads with jacketed bullets that work great with this rifle, but I'm really not satisfied with my cast bullet loads. I have some reduced power loads that work fine at plinking distances with the lead bullets but the accuracy isn't satisfactory for 100 yards. Thanks in advance for any help.

Try going to Load your own data and see whats there. I had the marlin 45/70 rifle years ago and was amazed at how accurate the cartridge is with jacketed bullets, was using Barnes 300gr spitzer for the first shot only, has pointed head, also the 400 gr rn, took a 280lb Boar with 1 shot! Good luck its a fun cartridge.

jerryd: I don't know what planet I've been living on, but although I regularly visit other reloading forums, I've never visited or heard of Load Your Own before. It's great! Thanks. I'll be a regular visitor to that site from now on.

Glad you enjoy it,been reading about the 45/70 lately, starting to kindle the old flame again. sorry i got rid of mine had a ruger no.3 marlin, and a H&R trap door, oh well have to build my collection up again!!!

I've only tried 1 lead bullet in my Guide gun. It was a Mister cast 500gr FP
Got it up to 1400fps :what: only tried a few, for obvious reasons :)
I have also tried the Berry's plated w/ a case full of Varget. I dont remember the exact speed but it was slower than the same charge with a jacketed bullet. I stick to Rem 405's, They were on sale at midway and I picked up 500 of them, I'll be shooting them for a while.
