I'm getting some pretty good results with Speer and Sierra bullets in my Rem 700 .35 Whelen. A while back, a local shop had a going out of business sale and I picked up a couple of boxes of some 212 gr. gas check .358 bullets.

I can't find any data on these - - Not even in my 40-year old Lyman manual. I'd appreciate some of your pet loads - - Type and weight of powder, esitimated velocity, and what kind of accuracy you're getting, in whiat kind of rifle.

Many thanks - -
Johnny

powder selections

I'll list the starting loads I have. Almost all are Accurate powder.
Acc. 2520 48.6 gr
A-xmr-2495 46.8 gr
A-xmr-2015 45.0 gr
Acc. 2230 46.8 gr
Acc. 2700 57.0 gr
A-xmr-4350 54.0 gr
Acc. xmp5744 30 gr
Acc. 8700 58.5 gr

***These loads are listed in "Modern Reloading" (second edition) for a .35 Whelen and a 205 grain lead bullet (no listing for 212 gr).***

Verify everything I posted and have fun.

I appreciate it

Have you personally used any of these loads? If so, in what type rifle? Any seem more promising as to accuracy and velocity?

Many thanks
Johnny

Don't have a whelen

No I've not used any of these loads, but I have been thinking of buying a .35 for a while now. I'd try the Accurate 8700 58.5 gr load first, simply because I've USUALLY gotten better accuracy from loads that use most of the case capacity. Case cap for the Whelen is 4.12 cc, that powder in that amount is 4.02 cc average. It's also a fairly low pressure load, rated at 26,600 psi. vs. 59,615 for the highest load I could find (for a jacketed bullet). Also try the
A xmr 3100 load. Book says 320 more fps, but also 16,000 more psi. Nearly same volume, though. Might be another keeper.

I was suprised how accurate the 35 Whelen was with XTP bullets and pistol powder. That cannon could be used to hunt mice!

1) 35 Whelen 1909 Mauser test on 5-14-05

a) 15 gr. Herter's 164 powder, 158 gr. XTP, 2.84", belled, chamfered,
CCI200, three holes touching every time with 4X Weaver scope at 40 yards 1425 fps

b) 10 gr. Herters 164 158 gr. LSWC
not so accurate as XTPs.

c) 55.8 gr. IMR4895, Sierra 2850 225 gr., 3.25" CCI200
2772 fps Heavy gun with recoil pad made for the big push recoil
