I'm picking up my new Henry H009 in .30-30 Win tomorrow and I'd like to try some 158 gr LFP cast bullets in it. Anyone have any experience with this rifle? Does it like cast bullets and if so, does anyone have any recipes? Thanks!

I can't speak to that rifle in particular, but the 30/30 has a long track record of success with cast bullets so long as you use correct loading techniques. There's no reason to suppose a Henry that shoots well with jacketed won't handle cast just fine.

A lot of folks with Marlin micro groove rifling had and continue to have troubles with cast bullets. But such stories are the only ones I've seen. No one has said anything like this about Henry 30-30's.

Keep in mind that with cast you can't load up to full speed unless they are gas checked or some other special treatment is used. This new fangled powder coating trick seems to be one option. Another is the old trick of paper patching. Otherwise plain base cast bullets are pretty much limited to around 1600 to 1700 fps. And they can only go that fast with careful attention to the alloy mixture used for the lead. Otherwise they are limited to closer to 1500fps.

Why not write Henry and ask then if the rifling in their 30-30 is Ballard style rifling.

I have a Glenfield 30-30 that has Ballard rifling and I shoot plain base 165gr Cast bullets a lot. They are very accurate for me and like said above, cheap to shoot...

If the bullet fits your throat and the alloy/lube/coating are all good you shouldn't have any problems but there's a lot more to loading lead than there is jacketed.
