I'm also interested in opinions from anyone who has used any of Caswell's kits. The descriptions make them all seem attractive.

COLD black oxide.

Black oxide has been around for along time, but caswells kit is a COLD black oxide that is why I am interested. It requires no acids or chemical baths. Im worried about the durability the most. Painting a gun just doesnt seem right.

I've painted a few guns quite successfully. KG Coatings GunKote is resonable durable well when applied over a Parkerized surface. No paint will last forever but I've been pleasantly surprised by how well that treatment has worked. It protects against rust (unless it is scraped or banged off) and it's easy to apply another coat over a previously coated surface.

Of course I'm like most other people. I'm always looking for something even better.

I've used Caswell's cold black oxide. It's o.k. at best. I wouldn't use it in place of a hot salts blue or a slow rust blue. I had repeated results that look a little bit grey... almost like a parkerized part. If you're looking for fast and easy, it will be just that. If you're looking for a really nice finish that can compete with the factory original bluing, don't use this stuff.

I use Caswell's black oxide also. It works, but I'm not that impressed with it for looks. It seems to be quite durable though.

For an AK I'd recommend Lauer Duracoat. It's a paint but it's not like the other gun paints in that it forms a very thin film and is extremely durable. It comes in many colors also and requires no baking, though you do need to "age" it for a while to let it harden properly. A spray on coating would be the correct finish for an AK anyway.

Anybody else

Anybody else tried this product? Right now painting is kindof out of the question due to me living in an apartment.
