I am wondering if there is or ever has been any sort of sling available that would attach to a saddle-ring lever gun (Winchester 94 or 95) in a similar manner to the old cavalry slings used on the Sharps carbines? Assuming no product is commercially made, does anyone have any suggestions on how to fabricate one?

This would be used for hunting applications, so historical accuracy is not a concern.

Thanks.

I do not have a current catalog, But DIxie Gun Works has long offered a calvery sling with carbine swivel.

This is just a single broad loop of leather with something like a snap link on a swivel on the end. The snap link hooks into the carbine ring.

It is not that useful on foot, (it has but one attachment point and that well behind the center of balance so the carbine hangs muzzle down and out of the way on horseback) and its actual purpose was top allow a trooper to drop his carbine and change to his pistol or sword in the heat of battle and not loose his carbine.

THe '94 around here has a set of Uncle Mike's studs on it and a cheap carry sling with attacjhed sling loops that comes on or off as needed. The but is a normal screw in mount and the front is a blued clamp that attaches around the magazine tube right at the ring that holds the mag tube to the barrel.

Bazillions of folks use that type of set up.

Nate,

Ages agp some one made a leather pocket that laced on like a butt shell holder that had a sling attached and the barrel end was a thing much like a Mosin Nagant dog collar. Have not seen such in eons but if you are handy with leather and a handi stitcher.......

It occurs to me that you might try one of the new tacticool one point slings made for the high speed low drag AR shooting crowd. There ar models that attach to a ring between the recoil buffer tube and the lower reciever as the only point of contact. The ided being mush like the calverary sling in that the "operator" can simply drop his AR and have it hange muzzle down in front of him while he transitions to another weapon or has other used for his hands.

Post a question about single mounting pont tactical sligs or better yet do a search for them first, then give up and post the new topic.

The saddle ring on commercial rifles like the Winchester 94 and 95 was not meant to hang from a crossbelt. Rather, it was to take a leather thong that could be looped over the saddle horn. Without the bar and sliding ring of the cavalry carbine, carrying a '94 or '95 on a sling (especially on horseback) is likely to pull the ring's mounting stud out of the receiver.

I appreciate the advice, folks, particularly the warning regarding the load limits on the mounting stud.
