How loud are these really from a standard 22lr rifle? I am curious if someone can compare the noise to something. For example, same sound as a cap gun would make using the paper snaps, or as loud as a cartidge fired with just a primer and no projectile, etc.

personally they are just a tad above my comfort threshold without any hearing protection. of your choices i would say it is closer to a primer, maybe a little louder
 
CCI CB's are pretty load. Less then a .22 standard velocity Short, but not a whole lot less. They do contain a little powder.

Aguila Colibri are way quieter as they contain no powder at all.
But you have to make sure every bullet gets out of the barrel.

I have never stuck one in well over 500 rounds of them, however some people apparently have in longer barrels.

Aguila also makes a Super Colibri which is a little louder then the regular Colibri, and more like the CCI stuff.

I was curious too and shot a couple in my garage with the neighbors just a yard away. Watching them through my windows they did not react at all. I went outside and shot two more...again..no reaction...does not sound like "Gunfire" in my opinion, more of a loud "Splat" than "Crack" or "Boom"...

Yes, you could decimate the local wildcat population in the city limits relatively un-noticed if the Red Ryder was out of commission...
 
CB Longs are no more loud than an average pellet rifle and make more noise hitting a metal target than when fired. They are way more powerful than Aguila Colibri ammo and penetrate 3/4" boards at 40 or 50 yards. Know your city laws before shooting firearm in city limits no matter what ammo used.
 
Surprisingly loud in a revolver. Needed hearing protection (in my living room anyway).

Penetrate a LOT more than a 1000 fps pellet rifle. CB shorts from a revolver went right through my "backstop" -- which was more than sufficient for the .177 pellets, even the hunting pellets.

I agree that CB shorts are quieter than the average air rifle.
I can sit in my family room and shoot a 100 of them at a safely backdropped target in my yard and the neighbors won't even notice.

Slightly off topic (sorry). I have shot these in my 94/22 before. However, what do you guys think about using them in a bolt action? I assume it wouldn't hurt anything in regards to the chamber? Also, would you have to load them one at a time, or would they feed from the magazine?

Sorry about the "slightly" off-topic questions, but I wouldn't mind a response. I have been curious about this lately anyway.

The CB Long Rifles feed just fine in a bolt-action. The CB shorts don't always feed as well. Don't think they hurt the chamber.

I shoot CCI CB's in my Marlin 981t and Yes they are quiet. My Nail gun is louder.
 
They are similar to firing a high powered air rifle.

Be very careful of your backstop. The low speed, roundnosed bullets LOVE to richochet.
 
Too loud in my Taurus 94, with a 4-inch barrel. In a single-shot rifle I have (Stevens 89), they sound like a stiff crack of a yardstick on a desktop (think Catholic school!)
 
Shoot them out of garage into yard also with very close neighbors also. The action of the gun is louder than the CCI CBs. The regular old short CBs are more quiet and slower, I've ad them bounce off of glass bear bottles without breaking the bottle before.
 
The key is barrel length. Mel Tappan wrote about this in the 1970s, and said that a 24-inch barrel or longer was needed for quiet shooting of CCI .22 CB Longs. He was right. In a 22-in barrel: BANG! In a 24-inch barrel: (pop).

From 50 yards away, it might escape notice altogether. I can shoot without hearing protection, and I sometimes use them at a local (private) range when I'm the only one there, and it's early. They allow me to get some quiet practice in early in the day (first light) in the summer.

Friends like them for shooting at their rural homes without disturbing everyone around.

Just find an older bolt action with a long barrel, and you're good to go.

Or a Marlin 39A, currently sold with a nice 24" barrel. Feeds Shorts, Longs, LRs, shoots anything from CBs to Velocitors. Holds 26 Shorts in the magazine.

The only problem is, it's so fun you'll spend too much on ammo.:)

Very true! I shoot mine from a CZ 452 and it's a fun way to target practice.

Cb's are very quiet out of my Mossberg with a 26" tube. Fired 5 rounds at a phone book and 4 sailed right through. One didn't make it and was stopped in the last few pages.

I thought the phone book would catch them all but the little CB's had more penetration than I expected.

My 22 cal air rifle wouldn't come close to going through a phone book.

You are right. I live in a very small one traffic light town. Our phone books are only 1 1/4" thick.
