Here are 2 targets I shot with those CBs We talked about in the previous thread. Shot with my Ruger MKII 6-7/8" barrel with Ultra dot scope, benchrested and dialed in to 25 ft. The left target represents groups at 25 feet (center) 50 ft (group at 12 o'clock in 9 ring) and 75 ft (25 yds)(loose group to left of 50 ft group. Some shots found their way into the 50 ft group) Target to right represents another group at 25 ft (center) and the second loose group high and left is at 75 ft again.

Note, the one stray shot in the 10 ring actually belongs to the 75 ft group. I think I got a weak CB on that one or at least that's the excuse Ill be using. :D All targets were shot poa/poi and all were aimed at center.

The bolt only cycled about 1/2" and they weren't much louder than a loud hand clap. I shot a few with no muffs just to see and it was quite tolerable.

All in all, favorable results. I DID have to adjust the scope about 15 clicks toward "up" to make up the difference in trajectory between .22 LR and .22 short CB at 25 ft. IIRC the left target was 15 clicks up and on the right I added a couple more.

CB longs are better

IMHO. They feed better from a Ruger mag and the brass is the same size as .22 LR so you don't get a ring of crud halway down your chamber.

Yea, a couple of folks had mentioned that in the last thread. I already had a box of the teeny ones and I couldn't resist. They're SO CUTE!! :D

I guess I'd have to do a re-sight with the longs. They might be a little more accurate farther out not having to jump that gap in the chamber.

Incidentally, this all started with the relentless attack of the evil squirrel empire on the wife's bird feeder. Squirrel "resistant" bird feeders are many $ a piece to discover that they are not that "squirrel resistant" after all. We've spent enough to know this now.

The latest update on the battle is that the empire has received a temporary stay of execution whilst we try the cayenne pepper maneuver. I know some out there are rootin' for the squirrels.

And there's nothing wrong with that.

:D

Will do! I should know in a couple of days. I see birds for now and no squirrels for the moment. If the birds stop coming we'll know they don't like cajun style food. :p

Brings me to another thought. I shot down at the Bridgeport Rifle Club in Bridgeport CT yesterday, excellent range. They sold me a bowl of caribou chili. Then they let me top it with some homegrown homemade habenero ground pepper. I dusted it lightly and it was a good thing that's all I did. WHEW!! I was sweatin' in NO time! :fire: :D

Awesome stuff both the chili AND the pepper.

;)

If'n you do pop the squirrels, they work pretty good in homemade chili, as do alot of other small game animals...I used to be reknowned for my chili recipe(s)... There's more than one, because if I made "full tilt" Tex-Mex Chili, no one but me would eat it (Hint: if you don't have tears streaming down your face, it isn't hot enough!)...So, now my recipes range from "moderate" (my kids will eat it) to "not-quite-lethal", which is for anyone who likes it hot!

Squirrel update...

Well, since the addition of cayenne pepper to the feeder I must admit I haven't seen a squirrel in days. Unfortunately I haven't seen any birds either. the seed level has not dropped at all. I did watch one bird take a seed, drop it, shake it's head and look quizzically at the feeder and then gingerly take another and fly off. Me thinks the birds don't like cajun style.

Momma is at the "Eff the birds, let 'em eat worms!" stage.

She's so cute when she gets mad!

:D

280, my problem is they have gotten into the engine compartment of my truck and chewed on the A/C tubing! :what: So much that the dealer thinks the tubes will need to be replaced! I'm trying everything, mint, moth balls, "Squirrel Gone", letting the dog loose, and my last resort is a Daisy Pellet gun :cuss: Little b*****ds! Let me know what works otherwise, we can have a Saturday shoot at my place

LOL...Really? I CAN come equipped...

.223 oughta be enough?

Like chili?

:D

Now that you mention it, my wife DID see a squirrel going into the engine compartment of my car and dang if that thing isn't acting up again. I checked for loose wires but not CHEWED wires. Hmmm...

Seriously though, try the cayenne. Mix a bunch in water and spray it around in there, especially on wires and hoses. I'd try a small area first to make sure it doesn't cause other problems.

I put some non treated seed on the deck just to make sure it wasn't the seed itself they didn't like. That seed was gone in no time but the feeder hasn't been touched in days.

Squirrel update...

Turns oput the birds ARE eating the seed. They may not have been able to find it in it's new place. The cayenne seems to be doing the trick!

:D

Great 280! GuessI'm gonna have to start ordering more Domino's pizza so I can collect all those free packets of red pepper (that I never use) for my bird feeder!

It has to be powdery not flaky, I think anyway. Try it and see how it goes.

Yea, as far as that homegrown Habanero, The chili was sweet, no heat whatsoever. I put just a twinkle on under the watchful eye of the duty cook and it actually went to just about the right heat for me. Enough to make you sweat but not so much you can't eat it. I was amazed at how little it took and that stuff immediately went to at LEAST 3 alarms maybe pushing 4...

I was impressed by the whole thing. Can you tell?

Then, while I'm eating my chili, I got a blow by blow description of the big brawl the Murphy cousins got into on St Patty's day at the VFW. And in between all that there was the target shooting which was the reason I was there in the first place. Does it GET any better than that?

:D

Well, I hate to say it but my wife chased a squirrel off the feeder this morning. :(

Maybe it was just getting it's first taste of the cayenne and won't be back?

We'll see...

:)

If you pop the squirrel AFTER it eats the cayenne-spiced birdseed, do you think you'll have to add some the the chili?

Good question, I ma7y have to adjust down a little on the cayenne...

;)

Funny as all get out...I watched another of the little culprits feast for a good three minutes then all of a sudden he stops, tail twitching away and off it runs to the backwoods. I watched it bounce around there from tree to tree for a good 15 minutes, tail going crazy the whole time and obviously very agitated. Funniest thing I ever saw. He musta got enough cayenne to choke a horse...I had tears in my eyes I was laughing so hard.

:D

I've been reading this thread and the previous associated one with interest. I have a few comments from personal experience. The CB Longs are definately the way to go rather than the shorts. I used these last year to shoot ground squirrels on my 5 acres. If you have 300 acres of wooded backstop you have nothing to worry about regarding safety to others. I'd be more worried about bounce-back from trees and the like as these are pretty low velocity rounds. Make sure you wear eye protection. Shot placement is also pretty important. CB rounds make nice clean holes with little collateral tissue damage. They can be effective at extended range (I've killed ground squirrels at over 50 yards) but at any distance they are devilishly difficult to estimate trajectory. I always kind of figured hitting ground squirrels at 50 - 75 yards with CBs is like hitting human sized targets with a .223 at 500 yards. You can do it but there will be lots of drop, no wind resistance to speak of, and decreased lethality.

I've stepped up the ante myself. I purchased a Savage .17 HMR and put a Mueller 3-9X40 Sportdot scope on it. I shoot off my deck at ranges from 50 to 150 yards. I do have other houses around but they are only close to my left and right and well out of line with my shooting. The houses in the direction of my shooting are in the 750 yard range away. With the angle of shooting and the fragility of the .17 rounds with the polymer tips I believe I have a good safety margin. Those HMRs drop very little at those ranges and do all sorts of very ugly things to ground squirrels.

Habeneros are wicked little items. I've managed to avoid them myself but my oldest son has always styled himself as a lover of hot peppers. A year ago last Christmas I bought a jar of Habenero peppers for him to try. He promptly opened up the jar and popped one into his mouth. His reaction was wonderful to watch and will remain as part of the family's Christmas lore for many years. I almost felt sorry for him. He hasn't opened the jar since.

Great news, 280. A few years back, I planted a good sized strawberry bed for my wife and we rarely get to eat any because Rocky and the boys seem to love strawberries. Now, we can FIGHT BACK! Heh heh...

Yup, picked up a box of longs today which means I MUST go back to the range for more testing! :D

I have 300 yds of woods behind the direction of the shots I may take. I also plan to build a backstop for safety purposes if it comes to that. The 17HMR idea I like but I don't think theres enough room for it here.

Biker, try it on the ground? Maybe they'll pick it up on their paws. I'd only try it on a few berries at first to make sure it doesn't damage them.

I was thinking, if I throw a little garlic and oregano in there with the cayenne I may come up with totally pre-seasoned squirrels.

LOL...

You need a nice airgun. Less likely to damage your feeder and quieter too.

Habaneros have the best flavor in the pepper world, with smoked tabascos being a close second, IMO. I grew up on habaneros that we grew on a bush outside the back door. That's some good stuff, but hot as it gets. The heat during consumption is not too bad for me, but I've begun cutting back due to my reduced tolerance for the effects of the "second" wave of heat. :(

CCI .22 CB

:)

Great Report, pics and sharing by all.

Them shorts are cute little buggers aren't they? :p

Now 280PLUS , get you a NAA .22 Mini-Revolver, the 1 1/8" bbl one. Grown folks should not have this much fun shooting rats...

Yes the longs do work better for most things - still - I still like the shorter , cuter, little shorts. Real quiet from a single shot Rem 514.

Had to use the NAA to fight my way to the Rem 514. That's my story and I'm sticking to it...

Rumor is if one takes jalapenos and blends them "just right" - looks just guacamole dip.

Dogs, squirrels and the - I will neither confirm or deny any knowledge of any of this "just appearing" - where a certain group against guns and for hugging trees was having a picnic - all react the same.

*snicker*

Dam Cap'n Dam good shootin!
Thanks! The Boy Scouts taught me how to do that when I was a wee pup. If only I could do that well during the pistol matches. :D

sm- oh to be a fly on the wall for THAT episode
