CCW and a name change

I was going to take the CCW class this coming Saturday but then I started thinking. I am going for my citizenship interview in February and will be changing my name to a more americanized version. Do you think I should wait to take the class afterwards to avoid the hassle of explaining to the state why my completion certificate (or whatever you get when you pass the course) and application for CCW have two different names?

Not sure how things work, but outta curosity, what's your nationality? You talking family or individual name?

I don't think the name change will be all that difficult to explain. I expect you'll get a legal document showing your both your old and new names. This should satisfy the CCW board.

Then again, you never know with the bureaucrats...

I went thru the same ordeal, along with an address change.

Everybody I talked to suggested to update the name and address before sending in the application. Here in Texas I was able to take the course, then send in the application later at my convenience. This way I took the class, filled out the application with my new intended name, but waited until my name was legally changed before sending it in.

Usually a copy of your naturalization certificate with your new name is all they require.

Oh yeah, wanted to add a congratulations. I've lived here nearly my entire life and somehow my paperwork slipped thru the cracks so I didn't get naturalized until a little before Sept 01.

Here changes have been pretty smooth due to marriage/divorce.
Thinking positivley your change should be welcomed and spl handled due to be citizenship. Congrats.

Aren't those 3 separate burrocrat interfaces you're planning after the CCW class? CHL application, citizenship, and name change?

I'd take the class, because any name change red tape can easily be straightened out through the burrocrat's channels. Bet you get your CHL before the rest of the events are completed!

Frankly & not knowing some of the intracacies, I'd take the class, inform the instructor & "bleed a little" while informing him/her abouts all aspects of the class - they may have some clue as to how it might work out.

Worse case, your name-change should leverage over - a "mere" (could be) a court-thing here in the Land of The Free ....

Gotta ask though.

Why any name-change at all? My own "parent name" could have been changed over upon entering - I really haven't a clue.

Personally. I would be very pleased enough to just maintain it, if at all possible.

Certainly nothing to be "ashamed of." If you've other reasons, I'd be just as OK with that as well - as if I'd have anything to do with your decision anyway ..... Obviously your choice.

The Bureau-rats give you a hard time about name changes, they did for me after my citizenship; my passport and my "legal name" which is to say different from my "citizen name" and so I have a lot of problems buying airplane tickets... But I digress.. Take the class first, and deal with the BS later..

My biggest complaint about Sheslinger is that she doesn't seem to be "pulling on the reins" tight enough... It looks to me like Cslinger has her beat as far as # of guns; she's gotta work harder A bit of free advice; shoes or guns; pick the guns!!

I'm assuming that you will be making a celebratory purchase of a firearm to welcome yourself "properly" to the US of A? Don't tell me, let me guess, a Sig??

and I for one am going to march right out and get her a nice SIG P225 as a.....gift, yeah that's it a congratulatory gift for getting her citizenship. It is the only right thing to do. I mean this is a big thing and she should be....ahhh rewarded yeah that's it rewarded.

Hi Sheslinger! Glad to see you're getting your CCW! We'll have to go out shooting again soon! What gun are you going to be carrying?

When you turn in your CCW application, it would probably be a good idea to also include a copy of the paperwork showing your name change, just in case they get confused and "can't find your background history". Considering TBI couldn't do simple math to determine I turned 21 on the day I was purchasing my first handgun, I wouldn't put it past them to screw up something a little more difficult.

Otherwise, the CCW process was rather painless, other than having to wait around 90 days to get the permit in the mail.

Twoblink, keep in mind that even though most guns are registered to Cslinger, I am the one who made him buy the last four in a three month period. So I think I am doing ok.

To those of you who asked about my reasons for the name change. I applied for citisenship in February 2002 and we were getting married in September. I was not sure if I should have put my future married name on the citizenship app or my current name. I figured I'd leave it as current because with my luck, citizenship would happen before the marriage and then I would have to explain to the state and the church why my husband and I have the same last name. So, I put my current name on the app. We got married in September and I did not change my last name then because I figured I would go through citizenship and have to change my first name anyway (to americanize it, because no matter how you spell my real Russian name in English, it is still not the same as in Russian, so why not americanize it?). I did not want to have to change SS card, driver's license, credit cards, mortgage, bank accounts, etc. twice in 6 months so I just decided to wait and now I find myself in this predicament.

Thank you for your replies. I think I will take the class this week and will deal with bureacracy afterwards.

Twoblink, the next gun on the list is an M1 Carbine (you were close with the SIG, though. Cslinger sold his P225 and REALLY wants it back).

Unless they have changed things since I got my Citizenship the only documents you will have for your name change will be on the back of your nauralization certificate. Just a simple statement that your name was legally changed and the judge who certified it.

Good luck on your interview. I think they went to a standardized test these days. When I got mine it all depended on what the interviewer thought about your "Americanization". Back then I had just gotten back from Iraq with the 24th ID, so my test consisted of a couple of questions and I was good to go. About five minutes total and a written statement " I can read and write english". Some folks were in there over an hour!!

Anyway..the best thing is that now you can vote!
