I'm a student at the University of Alabama. I tried getting my CCW renewed today, but I found out that as a student in a post VT world, I have to get approval from the University Police Chief first before getting it from the County Sheriff's office. Nevermind that guns are already prohibited from campus for students...

Apparently I have to go through an interview sometime next week, if the receptionist was correct in that the chief will actually call me.

Anyone else notice any changes to CCW policies since VT?

wow.....that sucks!

Sorry to hear they are making you jump through a bunch of hoops just to renew. I wish you the best of luck in the interview, this is the first I've heard of this.

Do you live on campus or something? That's the only reason I can think of that would make them require such a thing. If you lived off campus I don't see what right they have to make you get approved by the campus police chief. As long as you don't break school policy by bringing a gun onto campus what right does the school have to possibly deny what you do off campus. I know the school I went to had a no alcohol on campus policy, but they didn't require you to get approval to drink off campus:scrutiny:

the Legislature intended that the sheriffs of the counties issue pistol permits in appropriate cases. The use of "may" in the statute allows a sheriff not to issue a pistol permit to a person not qualified to carry a pistol, or to use his sound judgment to refuse to issue a permit to a person if there are circumstances causing the sheriff to believe reasonably that the person should not possess or own a pistol. The sheriff may not arbitrarily refuse to issue a permit without a sound reason

Thanks for the pdf.

I guess it's still open for interpretation and question. A "sound reason" to a liberal is different than a sound reason to a conservative.

Just so you know. It's not illegal to carry a pistol onto campus, it will just get you expelled if the uni finds out.

Also, the Sheriffs in Alabama are known to make up all sorts of crazy rules. In Lee County (Auburn University), the Sheriff apparently requires you to give him the serial numbers of the pistols you will carry....

Up until recently many permits restricted unconcealed carry, which is probably not even legal to revoke a permit for, since the permits only apply to concealed carry, and unconcealed carry is legal....

I recently had a meeting with my Sheriff to get a permit, and it was turned down due to my age. The Sheriff of my county decided to raise the minimum age as set in the Code of Alabama...

Right now, I don't have too many options. Suing the department would take longer than just waiting 'til I'm 21... If I started this process when I was 18 I probably would sue, but it's too late now.

If you want some extra information concerning pistol permits go ahead and PM me or ask in this thread. I can dig up quite a few documents if you like...

Democrat/Republican makes no difference. My Sheriff is a Democrat, and apart from the age requirement, he doesn't really have problems issuing pistol permits.

Remember, our Republican governor tried to pass the largest tax increase ever, and it was a Democrat that introduced our version of the Stand-your-ground law....

marklbucla,
How long did Alabama take in getting back with you about this?

It took about two weeks, I think, but I had to email Captain Harris about it. The guy on ARF took much longer because he didn't follow up with him about it.

Once you've got the letter in hand from UAPD, the renewal at Tuscaloosa County was the same day.

Are you at UA also?

Ask your university police if, after passing their interview, you can carry on campus. Permissions has been granted at a few Texas state schools.

marklbucla,
Yep, on UA. Took a month. Follow up didn't work for me. Any idea how long it takes the other county schools to schedule their meetings?

Nebor,
Can not have anywhere or anyway on campus (except they will store the gun for you). That is what the one month wait was about, sit down and discuss and sign statement that you know the campus policy.

Yes, it takes a month of waiting to spend 10 mins discussing campus policy. They are also doing multiple computer checks, much the same that you would expect the CCW issuing authority to do.

Might want to think twice about that... I did so as a student at a school in the northeast a few years ago (following school policy and was a CCW holder). Never heard back from campus police until I got a 6AM search of my dorm room by two armed undercover campus police detectives, warantless of course.
