Is there a forum or website where I can find out info about classes and instructors in the Tulsa, OK area?

I have heard some instructors are better than others. Also that some classes cover the bases better.

Just wondering how I would find this out before signing up for one.

What local shooting ranges & clubs do you have near you? The first thing you should do is check with them since they all should Have classes as part of their offerings. If they don't have directly offer classes, they will be able to point you in the right direction.

Talking to them will also give you opinions on who the better instructors are.

I know a couple of places that people have consistently spoken highly of: http://www.2ashootingcenter.com/store/class/CC and http://www.usshootingacademy.com/classes/68

And I will offer my experience for a 180 degree different perspective. I attended the cheapest class in the area, the standard $60 fee, with a $10 discount for joining a free web site. $5 to rent a .22 semi with ammo. Class was in a pet grooming salon and dogs and cats wandered the "classroom." The "range" was somebody's back yard on Keystone and the lone target was a dead tree.

CCW class in OK is so constrained by law, there is little time for the instructor to do much more than read the prescribed parts of the SDA handbook to you. (This is not to say that a top notch instructor can't take time to offer valuable information and correctly answer students' questions)

Likewise, there was not much time at the range to offer more personal training than what was required to keep some of the students from shooting themselves - many of the students had no clue how to even load and insert a mag in their own pistol.

I never regretted the choice and actually I enjoyed watching the animals in class during the most boring recitation of SDA law.

Like you, I had considerable firearm experience before getting the permit. But faced with the need to spend ~$200 for a card to exercise my right to carry, I chose to save money where I could and use it on ammo and better handgun training in some other, optional, class.

Good luck to you!

Ditto Frosty Dave,

If you are experienced with handguns, self defense laws in general and Oklahoma law I would take the least expensive class. The course content is mandated by law so the information will be the same.

If you feel you need more firearms training sign up after the classes with a shooting school. A quick Google search lists the U.S. Shooting Academy and The Defensive Shooting Academy of Tulsa.
