Where can I find more websites that offer training classes? I know of the Alias site; where can I find similar? I've never taken a course, so I was looking for a pistol, concealed-carry, or basic carbine class or combination thereof. If it matters I'm in the Midwest.

I'll add that I'm able to find private instructors locally, but I can't really vet them and I don't want to risk "training scars". Ideally I'd be looking for a class from a quality instructor that covers both pistol and carbine, with an emphasis on concealed carry for the pistol and home defense for the rifle and plenty of time on the range going over technique (I can do my own research on laws and equipment using Google).

Alias is the best all in one site. It is hard to find a pistol/carbine combo class and that IMO is better for someone who has had dedicated training in each already. I'd do a 2-3 day defensive handgun class this year and a 2-3 day carbine course next year.

The handgun is the harder to master, especially since carbine HD ought to be done from a fixed position if at all possible, fairly straight forward.

For the training you're after, if you're willing to travel slightly West, I can highly recommend Defensive Firearms Training with Rudy Waldinger

Rudy is a great instructor and he offers weekend group classes and mid-week private instruction (an especially good value)...plus hotel rooms are very reasonable in Fernly NV

The NRA is offering a Pistol training course ....on line.

For more information , go to : onlinetraining.nra.org

The NRA/ American Rifleman magazine is a source of valuable information.

Hey, thanks for all the great information guys!

Sam, I did not see that link stickied (I kind of skimmed through the stickies looking for the word "training" and didn't see anything. Very glad to see that thread!). I will be looking into that whole thread as well as the recommendations here (yes I am willing to travel).

Strambo, that's kind of what I figured. For me, the handgun is the more likely weapon to be used, especially in a concealed carry sense outside of the home. Good to know I'm on the right track.

If you're in the MidWest, check out Tactical Defense Institute in southern Ohio. Top shelf school. Comparable to Gunsite and Thunder Ranch in the nineties.

Tactical Response is located in Camden, TN near KY lake and their classes are extremely good. If you want a no nonsense, learn how to survive a gunfight class, with plenty of shooting I would highly recommend them.

They have great prices and offer free lodging. Overall it was an awesome experience. I'm planning on doing a bunch more training with them during the remainder of the year.

Here are links to reviews of the classes that I've taken so far. There are also lots of reviews on YT and getoffthex.com

What's your budget?

If it matters I'm in the Midwest.

Whether or not it matters is up to you. How far are you willing to travel?

(I can do my own research on laws and equipment using Google).

Google is a good way to find out what options are available but it's not the ideal way to decide what works best for you.

I'll second this. Excellent school and instructors. Only downside is the classes book up fast. You'll probably need to sign up well ahead of time.

Budget is flexible, I was kind of assuming $500 for the class, plus another $500 for ammo, travel, lodging, food, etc. I can certainly budget up if need be.

While I'd be willing to travel, obviously the closer to home (Midwest) the better (less spent on travel, and more importantly, less time missed from work).
