First and foremost, I am a 1911 aficianado (fanatic) however, for the purpose of CCW, it seems to me that one of the primary concerns is how many missiles can be dispatched in the least amount of time in the event of confrontation with one or who-knows-how-many BGs. This consideration begs the question: Would the XD45 with 13+1 capacity be a better choice for CCW than the 1911 platform (7+1), no matter how highly I regard the 1911?

Your chances of being in a situation where you actually fire are pretty slim, and the chances you'd need more than two or three rounds is even slimmer.

That being said, I think the answer is "whatever makes you feel better".

Edit: You could always carry two 1911's...:)

I have 3 autos that I might carry (typically carry a revolver):
Glock 21
Springer XD9
1911

I have yet to find a satisfactory way to carry a doublestack .45. I can get away with the 9mm, but when I carry a .45, it is the 1911. I just can't hide the glock due to its width. I would imagine the XD45 to be similar.

That being said, I typically carry a sp101 with 5 shots. And I'm more likely to carry my 4" redhawk than the 1911.

Just carry... don't worry over-much about the rounds.

Hope this helps.

If it is any help, 1911s are far slimmer than any XD, which will make it more comfortable to carry, which means you will carry it more often. :) On the minus side, modern interpretations of 1911s can be fussy about functioning.

I've got the same options. I'm going with the 1911. The XD-45 just ain't hiding on my tall skinny frame.

If it needs more than 8 shots, hopefully I'm out of the area or at least to my vehicle (assuming I'm in a state that allows me to keep what I want in there).

Az, the XD 45 is much easier (well, if you have the service model or smaller) to conceal than a Glock as far as I've seen it (unless you have a compact). For carry, I'd personally pick the XD, but then I'm a small guy. If you can carry the 1911 without a problem, go ahead and carry it. Honestly, it's up to you- for some people it'll work for others it won't, so you may just want to try both out and see how it fits.

hmmmm...

...

7+1

Res mag one.. 7 (plan exit)

Res mag two.. 7 (exit)

Total for the day.. 22 rounds

Go with what you shoot best..

Ls ;)

Have you held 14 .45 rounds in your hand? Add the gun and mag and that starts getting heavy. If you carry one or two additional mags, another 26 rounds, that is a lot of lead to haul.

I like my XD, but if I need more then 8 .45 slugs, I am not doing my job. (or I need an M-16)

I like my XD's because they are point & shoot guns. When you are in a scary situation, that manual safety may be forgotton and that first shot really counts. Due to my shape, however, only the 4" XD 40 is comfortable for me to carry concealed. My XD 45 is always at my bedside though.:D

What size XD45 do you have? The 4" XD40 & 4" XD45 are virtually the same size, I carry my XD45 in the same holster I carried my XD9 in (XD9 & XD40 are the exact same size).

Anyway I say the XD45. No matter what people say in a stressfull situation I am pretty sure I won't be shooting to my best ability so I want as many rounds as possible. I am 5'11" 170lbs & carry my XD45 iwb everyday w/ no problems concealing. A lot of it depends on the holster you use to carry with. Now I understand that IWB is not comfortable for all people, but it works well for me & no one is the wiser that I am carrying.

I own both a 1911 and an XD-45, I love both but my XD-45 is the one that gets the duty carry 99% of the time now.

There are a couple of reasons why.

1. The XD is lighter (by a little)
2. Higher cap
3. Non checkered grip (the colt digs into my side and scrapes me up good)
4. Only have to carry 1 back up mag
5. Not safety not that its a big deal either way

Colt is prettier, mags are slimmer, a little more comfortable over all.
The Colt is more of an eye catcher, most think the XD is a glock.

The XD is really not a pretty gun. but it serves its purpose.

I have an 4" XD-40 that I bought to carry, but it's just enough thicker that I prefur to carry a 1911 most of the time. You'd be amazed how much .2" make IWB on comfort.

I had one of the first XD45s with the 13rd mags but at 5'8" 180 and small hands it was too much. My carry is an XD40sc 9+1 and my bedside is a Kimber 1911 at 8 +1. Goes against the grain but makes me feel good so I guess it works.

I'm 5'1", 250lbs, and I've never had problems carrying my XD45 Tactical. I use a Crossbreed IWB holster, which I like a lot, but I've got a Comp-Tac on order. The only trouble I have is with certain cars, the buckle on the seatbelt presses against the grip, but that would happen with any gun or holster.

how many people are looking to see if your carrying a gun at wally world?really?out of sight out of mind.I carry a XD9 service because you aim and shoot, that simple!things that slow you down can kill you like a safety, and holster straps.don't likem don't usem

I also occasionally carry an xd45 tactical in a crossbreed holster. I try to be selective of the cover garment due to the fact that the grip of the gun is long and prints more than others. Having said that, an xd45 compact is probably a better choice.

Ala Dan,
What is an XD-F?

You could have an 88 caliber whiz-bang with a 100 round magazine that only weighed 12 ounces, but it wouldn't do you a bit of good unless you can hit what you're shooting at. If you're proficient with brand x, carry that....... Unless you're proficient with it, you shouldn't be carrying it.

Just my opinion, flawed it may be, but it's mine. ;)

Not necessarily. I carry a 5 shot revolver and feel perfectly well armed with it. I have shot it a lot, and while I would never profess to being an expert or anything, I feel confident that I could put the rounds where I want them to go.

I say it really just depends on what you want to carry. If you would rather carry a 1911, then carry a 1911.

Usually I carry one of my 1911s. But, I live in Florida, so there aren't a lot of cover options.
My XD45 is great, but the butt is large and does print (N.B. -- not that many are aware enough to notice, but an LEO looking to put a notch on his record is NOT the type of notice I want).
The XD would be the first handgun I grabbed after a hurricane, but that would be after I grabbed my .308, AR and 12 ga. Remember, a handgun is what you use to fight your way to a rifle.
YMMV

I would look into the S&W 1911 scandium commander. The 1911 will be easier to conceal due to the single stack grip and overall thiness of the pistol. The lightweight of the scandium pistols makes it a worthy carry pistol. Also 14 rounds of .45 ACP adds up, that's quite a lot of a weight to carry around for a whole day.
