I was looking at different laws and like I could carry a 1898 or older handgun without a permit. Could anybody verify this? Its just out of curiosity.
Under FEDERAL law they are not defined as firearms. That definition only applies to FEDERAL laws....these old guns are not "defined" as firearms, which is a federal regulation...
Some states do and some don't, but MO appears to fall into the group that don't.However, in carrying a gun on one's person, that is a matter for the local and/or state laws, and those don't distinguish a Colt 1848 Wells Fargo from a Sig P238. A gun is a gun is a gun.

(2) The term ``dangerous weapon'' means a weapon, device,
instrument, material, or substance, animate or inanimate, that is
used for, or is readily capable of, causing death or serious bodily
injury, except that such term does not include a pocket knife with a
blade of less than 2\1/2\ inches in length.
