(Note that in South Africa, where this incident took place, a license to possess a weapon is also automatically a CCW permit for that weapon.)

JOHANNESBURG

Man rescues cop held at gunpoint

Mon, 11 Jul 2005

A Johannesburg motorist risked his life on Sunday to rescue a metro police officer held at gunpoint on the M2 East near Cleveland.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the officer was setting up his speed camera early on Sunday morning when he was approached by two men in their twenties.

"One pointed a gun at him and demanded that the officer give them his weapon," said Minnaar.

The officer refused, grabbed the firearm from the gunman and started wrestling with him. It was at that point that the 35-year-old motorist stopped to help.

He got out of his car, pointed his Colt .45 firearm at the gunman and ordered him to drop his gun. The gunman refused and the motorist shot him twice, wounding him in the hip, said Minnaar.

The two men ran away over the highway and were later found and arrested in the Cleveland area by Ekurhuleni metro police.

"We would like to thank the man for this brave action. He has asked to remain anonymous. He was very, very courageous to stop and help an officer in trouble," said Minnaar.

Had this happened over here, the quote would read:
"We would like to thank the man for this brave action, however we cannot condone his actions. He has asked to remain anonymous. He was very, very courageous to stop and help an officer in trouble, but that was a very dangerous thing to do. We are confident the officer could have handled the situation by himself" said Minnaar.

Really glad to read something like that.

A few years ago a policeman was ambushed in Arizona (Phoenix), and someone with a CCW helped out. I think the officer was killed, but the CCW guy was a help in locating the ones who ambushed the officer.

The complaint was that the news didn't get national coverage, just local. Anything to avoid showing CCW in a positive light.

Had it happened in San Francisco or Los Angeles,
"We're grateful for his help, but we cannot tolerate allowing private citizens to carry firearms on our streets and taking the law into their own hands like the motorist did. Vigilante justice is unbecoming of civilized society and he will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

Boston Globe...

"A Boston Police Officer, already fighting with two armed suspects, was menaced by another individual who approached and chased the other criminals away. After calling for backup, a large SWAT Team took this individual into custody after a tense two-minute confrontation during which this armed man tried to claim that he was merely an honest citizen who came to the aid of the cop.

The Boston PD confiscated the man's weapon ( a .38 S&W assault revolver which proved to be legally bought and registered through a loophole in Massachusetts law) is holding the man while they check his criminal history for ties with the Mafia, the Republican Party, the NRA, and the Catholic Church.

Mayor Tom "Mumbles" Menino stated in an interview, "We cannot allow these so-called "honest citizens" access to these weapons of war and mass destruction. We will crack down on them."

The Police officer is recovering from some minor injuries suffered in the fight and the emotional anguish of seeing an honest citizen with this deadly assault weapon."

Things must really be bad in Boston.

In Washington, DC:

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said that the two men who held the police officer have been released with the apologies of the police chief and the mayor; the wounded man has been promised free medical care for life, and the men have promised not to sue the city for interfering with a criminal in performance of his duty. The motorist was charged with assault, assault with intent to kill, attempted murder, owning a gun, firing a gun, and thinking about a gun. He is being held without bail and faces life imprisonment without parole for his actions. The mayor stated that, "This is the reason we need stronger gun laws; otherwise, crooks might not come to our city and our police and city leaders would have to actually live on their salaries."

Wierd, all the South Africans I've met in person, want to see guns outlawed. Even one who used to carry one in SA. "I carried because I had to, but now the crime is so bad, the goverment needs to take the guns from everyone, white and black." I told him he was insane.

I had an experience similar to Atek3. I as at Walmart buying ammo, and started talking with the salesman, a South African. He had carried back home, but he really didn't like guns. It was just necesary there. A freind of his was attacked by a gang of thugs while driving his car. His buddy shot one guy in the chest then ran over another.

This is where I call B.S. It's common knowledge that a .45 kills, everytime, no doubt about it. No possible way this guy was merely wounded, regardless of shot placement. :neener:

It would have at least blown his leg off. :D

"Crime is so bad that it's time to make sure everyone is defenseless against criminals."

Yeah, that'll work. :banghead:

What will that do to bring a stop to crime, exactly??

Atek3, this guy you speak of is insane -- or just stupid.

I think I can understand their feelings, but I don't think banning guns is going to solve the problem. If I lived in a country that violent, I might feel like that, though.

It's a combination of things, I think. When Government, through the schools, the media and through official and quasi-official channels, continually tells people how bad guns are, even the harshest critics of gun control begin to waver. We even see it here on these boards when some of us come out in favor of denying ex-convicts the right to self-defense. Never mind that they've supposedly paid their debt to society, keep right on punishing them! There are other ways we show how much and how well the Government has brainwashed us and if we do a bit of soul-searching, we can find them ourselves.
Paragraph 2 of Article VI of The Constitution doesn't say anything about exceptions to the law nor does the 2nd Amendament, yet all of us can find exceptions we think should be proper. Me? I think the founders were a helluva lot smarter than we are. :banghead:
