Since I have moved back home to Oregon from California I openly carry at all times.. keeps things simple.. a few polite questions.. but no rabid antis.. but since I do OC, I have had a couple of 'reminders' to cover up by local officers.. had to remind them that would be a crime as I have no permit..

I get "made" often, because I open carry.

My pat answer is "Because I don't know when or where crime will occur" Then I ask them if they are interested in learning to shoot or self defense/CCW. (That's Activism)

I did get made once while CCWing - but it was a co-worker who plopped down in my lap once day. She was a bit startled but didn't say anything even though the company had a very strong no-guns policy. (AOL)

I think a polite answer no matter how the person is reacting to you carring a gun is the way to go.

A rude person with a gun is just going to make them feel more strongly that people should not be walking around armed.
+1

Haven't been "made" yet, but that's because I live in NJ and can't carry anyways. Once we get over to PA (less than two weeks now), plan is to smile and say, "Yes sir/ma'am. I am licensed to carry it, would you like to see it?" And if they do, they'll also get a glimpse of my Federal creds and shield (I'm not an LEO, but am considered to be an unarmed agent).

I think I was made one time in my truck by a fault of my own. I was riding through a neighborhood where my company had built several homes and was flagged down by two neighbor women walking on the sidewalk who had purchased our homes. They had a question for me about one of their homes. When they came to the passenger window of my truck asking me something, I opened up my console to get a pen to take a note. When I did that I realized that I just exposed my 1911 to both of them. I didn't react and try to shut it real fast, but acted like it was normal (as it was). They didn't say anything, but I saw a kind of wide eyed look from one of the women for a brief second. Come to find out later, one of the women and her husband have their CC permit as well.

I've only ever been made one time that I know of. I often carry a mousegun (.32 or .380) RH back pocket. I'm not a young guy so my pants are either Dockers type or "relaxed fit" jeans. I carry in a Nemesis holster designed for back pocket carry.

The thing is, the person that made me is an old friend, has had a Texas CHL since they became shall issue, and often makes a little game of trying to spot somebody else carrying.

I was in a furniture store and had my fannypack on. The salesman asked if I was a LEO? I asked why? He said, well cops come in here all the time and they have fannypacks? I showed him my wallet and checkbook and he said OH, OK. The gun was in the rear compartment that he never saw.

you work for aol? both my brother and sister in law did till a few years back

i was made once while hunting i was on my own property and it was by a game warden he hadn't said anything to me yet so i didnt tell him i was carrying but the first thing he said is "thats a nice shoulder rig" i said thanks and we talked for a few minutes then i went back to my stand

A lot of the public have not had much exposure to firearms. They only feel safe if they see a cop with a gun. I don't/can't carry but I think I would just say; "Shhhhhhh, I'm undercover". Just hope it's not a cop asking, I wouldn't want to lie to a cop.

Thanx, Russ
Word to the wise Russ, impersonating an office will land you in the slammer. Illegal in every state AFAIK, and implying you are one just gives the cop ammunation to make sure you have a really bad day. Civilian you are ok, but even then, you tell that to the nosy types you might create a lot of problems for yourself.

I thought public servants were civilians too. ;)

You're absolutely right though. A "it's alright ma'am" would probably have the same effect without insinuating you are ... part of an elite that is often treated as above the law. I am blessed to generally have a good group of boys in blue in my area though.

CCW-How have you responded to being "made"?

I haven't yet been made however in the event I am,

My response depends on...

If I a single.

-and-

If the individual outed me was hot and of the opposite sex.
