I live in Shelby Co and attend Auburn University, and I am 18. I may take up a part time job this fall working security for events on and around campus, and some events post armed security. For this reason, the company requires applicants to possess a valid CCW permit (and valid driver's license).
I've been going through some posts here and reading the Code of Alabama, and ran into some questions, as would any intelligent person deciding to read the Code of Alabama. It WAS my understanding that Alabama, technically a may-issue state, will issue a pistol permit to any suitable person of 18+ years of age. To research Shelby County's laws I went to the sheriff's office website http://www.shelbyso.com/page.php?p=permits
Under "Guidelines" for the applicant I read this: "The applicant must be at least 21 years of age. At age 19, with the expressed permission of a parent or legal guardian, the Sheriff will consider issuance of a license."
Under the Code of Alabama, I can find no mention regarding the required age. My previous understanding was that an individual in the state of Alabama seeking a pistol permit must be at least 18 years of age.
How can Shelby County mandate that its applicants be 21 (or 19 with parental consent....and why should a 19 year old citizen be required to provide parental consent for anything) in order to qualify for a pistol permit?
Can anyone residing in Shelby County or Alabama give me advice, e.g. personal accounts?
