Hi all:

Not sure this is the right forum but I don't see a dedicated CCW forum here. I have CCW Safe and the NRA LoctonAffinity coverage for $1,000,000.00 which is underwritten by Lloyds of London. I am up for renewal on the NRA policy in a week or two.

I am going to definitely renew CCW Safe as I think it is inexpensive but the NRA Affiliate policy is relatively costly at $641.00 for a year of the million dollar coverage. While I doubt any of us have actually had to use either insurance recently, what would you say to check out as an alternative to the NRA LoctonAffinity policy? I believe that a million dollar policy would be what I want, but if I can find a superior value, I would consider other policies.

I know several who are using the www.uscca.com policy but I have never heard of them and have no idea if they are good, will actually do what they say they will do and who they are underwritten by? It's a bit confusing to buy this kind of insurance as hopefully few ever have to actually use it so buying a policy seems to be mostly conjecture and finger crossing.

Any insurance advice?

I had USCCA in the past and recently changed to CCW Safe after comparing the two. The problem I found with USCCA is that it's basically a legal expenses reimbursement program. You incur the expenses and as long as you've met the criteria and you're exonerated, they'll reimburse you up to the limits that you've selected. The don't offer any actual legal advice and don't provide the attorney for you. The do have a list of their preferred attorneys, however you're still on your own to find them and in many cases pay them a retainer fee which I found ridiculous, in order for them to consider taking your case in the very unlikely event that you ever need their services.

If you have CCW Safe, you're familiar with them and as you know, they actually provide the legal services and investigative services if you ever need them.

From a cost standpoint, I'm paying CCW Safe is about 1/3 of what I paid for the middle level of coverage with USCCA. One additional thing which USCCA does provide to it's members is quite a lot of educational material, videos and an excellent monthly magazine, but that's not what I was looking for. I wanted a legal services contract where all I would do is make one phone call and all of the wheels would be set in motion. That's what I found with CCW Safe and why I made the switch.

Thanks for your experience tcoz. It is my understanding that CCW Safe is to help you with any legal ramifications in a shoot situation, they take care of fighting the criminal charges that might be leveled against you.

It is also my understanding that my NRA LoctonAffinity coverage I have is for any civil case that might be leveled against you. I thought the USCCA coverage was also predominantly to cover any civil action? Or am I wrong? So it's your understanding that USCCA will not hire an attorney for you and will only reimburse? Also, your phrase about, "...as long as you've met the criteria and you're exonerated, they'll reimburse you..." Does that mean if the family of some gang banger you shot who was trying to rob or kill you sues you, USCCA will NOT pay out a settlement if you are found guilty of violating the civil rights of said gang banger or a sympathetic jury rules against you? They only cover legal fees but not settlement? If so, that doesn't sound like USCCA would cover the reason I need a policy. I am looking for something like CCW Safe for civil litigation and rulings, not just a a legal service reimbursement service. How else are you suppose to protect yourself from the family of an assailant coming after your possessions and assets?

I just checked my NRA LoctonAffinity policy and this is what is covered:

$1,000,000.00 Combined Single Limit Bodily Injury & Property Damage Each Occurrence
$1,000,000.00 Civil Damages and Liability
$100,000.00 Criminal Defense Reimbursement

Wondering if there is anything out there with a comparable level of coverage for significantly less than $641.00 per year? If not, I will renew it. If so, I want to check out other options.

CCW Safe actually provides their attorneys AND investigators to fight criminal and civil cases. You make a single call and they send a team out right away. I might be wrong about this but I think USCCA will only reimburse for criminal costs. I do know for a fact that they don't actually hire or provide your attorneys. That's up to you so they advise you to interview local attorneys and establish a relationship with someone. I tried that and they wanted a $500 retainer fee. It's strictly a reimbursement program. It appears that the NRA program is only a reimbursement program as well. It all depends on what you're looking for. Check the USCCA website. They explain exactly what they do in detail.

Any insurance advice?

Insurance gives you a right to file a lawsuit. Insurance companies get rich by not paying. You are in no position to be suing an insurance company when you have been indicted for murder. Insurance companies don't pay, they will spend the absolute minimum they can. At most they will send you a couple of apathetic underpaid nitwits.

I have litigated against pre-paid legal service attorneys before -- they are garbage. They didn't even show up to court!

All these companies sell is "peace of mind." You may as well buy magic beans from a gypsy.

I wanted a legal services contract where all I would do is make one phone call and all of the wheels would be set in motion.

If you are worried about going to jail/getting sued, call 9-1-1 and keep your gun in its holster. It is free, and a dedicated team of professionals will be mobilized to get you out of whatever bad situation you are in. These folks will respond much quicker and be much better trained than some guys you found on the internet. It is ludicrous to rely on some internet pitchmen over your average patrolman.

You have to set up your legal defense plan yourself, there is no shortcut to this.

Hi everyone. There are many companies out there offering insurance. The USCCA provides memberships that include an insurance-backed benefit, not a pre-paid legal service. We provide criminal defense, bail bond, immediate retainers for the attorney as well as civil damages and protection. We will provide an attorney for you or you may use your own. Take care and stay safe! Kristine - Member Services Advisor, USCCA

This must be a relatively new benefit with USCCA. When I joined, I had to find my own attorney and contact them ahead of time. USCCA did provide a list of recommended attorneys but none were within about 100 miles of me. I finally found one (not on their list) who had experience with SD cases but he wanted a $500 retainer. That's when I jumped ship to CCW Safe.

tcoz: Yes! We recently updated our membership benefits in July of 2015 to include our Critical Response Team. They will retain an attorney for you or you can still use an attorney of your choice. Take care and stay safe! Kristine - Member Services Advisor, USCCA
